5 Kitchen Redesign Tips for a Functional, Yet Safe Kitchen

In this article, we go over 5 tips that you can apply right now to redesign your kitchen and make it as functional as possible.

1. Your Kitchen Work Triangle

You may have heard of this term before, but you might not have designed your kitchen to be around this. The concept behind the kitchen work triangle is that the person cooking in the kitchen has three points of contact: the stove, sink, refrigerator.

The kitchen work triangle connects all those three points of contact with an invisible line. This invisible line will then guide you to designing your kitchen in a way that it makes your workflow more efficient or at least as efficient as possible.

And since you are reading this article, I’m assuming that your kitchen does not already have this layout. And that might be one of the reasons why you are considering remodeling your kitchen.

In either case when you are planning the redesign of your kitchen you want to make sure that you are keeping the path clear that goes to all three all those three points. having a clear path to all three points of contact you’ll ensure that you have a pretty efficient kitchen design.

Some remodelers might also recommend that you get a kitchen island. But that entirely depends on you and the space you have available in your kitchen.

For some people, this might not be practical because having a kitchen island might restrict their movement, and it might also make their entire kitchen look more cluttered.

But if you have enough space in your kitchen, getting a kitchen island might be a good idea.

Again, it all depends on how much space you have available in your kitchen and whether or not it hinders your work efficiency.

2. Get as Much Storage as Possible

In all my years of kitchen remodeling, I don’t think I have ever heard a client say that I don’t need a lot of storage.

And that makes sense because most kitchens are not designed like a bedroom, they’re living room, etc. And usually, there is not a straight line and there’s a lot of that space in the kitchen that needs to be filled.

Getting more storage is one of the best ways to fill up that storage and make it functional as well.

The idea behind getting as much storage as possible is that you never know what you might purchase and how much additional space you made in the future.

Let’s say you buy a new appliance and you need to move things over. If there is an additional storage space available in the kitchen that makes it easier for you to do that.

But if there isn’t additional storage available you might have to go through a lot of headaches to figure out where to put the stuff that you already have so that you can start using your new appliances.

Not only that you also want to make sure that you are using all the space you have available. Because there are always going to be that corners in your kitchen, and not having anything in those corners will make your kitchen look weird.

3. Arranging Your Seats

You might have already figured out that your kitchen is the heart of the home. This is the place where everyone likes to hang out and enjoy watching you cook a delicious meal for them.

And if a lot of people in your house gather in the kitchen you want to make sure that you have proper seating arrangements available.

You want to make sure that you are strategic about your seating arrangements. The best way to go about this is by making sure that there won’t be anyone sitting in your kitchen work triangle.

The best way to go about this is to have seats on the opposite end of a countertop. That way they can watch you cook as well as they are not getting in the way of your workflow.

And other non-American cultures make sure that most guests are being seated in the living room or in the Hall area that way they’re not gathering in the kitchen. so if you don’t like having people in your kitchen while you’re cooking you could do that as well.

Me personally, I recommend it having guests in the living room that way you can freely work on whatever you’re cooking and not have them keep staring at you the whole time. But maybe that’s just my outlook because I’m an introvert.

4. Organizing Your Garbage

You want to make sure that your kitchen is as organized as possible. That includes your garbage.

Having a separate drawer for your garbage is the best way to do that. And I recommend going one more step and organizing different types of garbage to enter different bins.

And let’s say that your garbage drawer starts to get smelly you can just take that one garbage bin outside and not have to carry a large garbage bag every single day.

Another thing with carrying large garbage bags is that if they start getting smelly you might need to take them outside even if they are not full yet.

With smaller bins and keeping your garbage separate, you can just take out the one bin that is smelling. That way you’re not wasting your garbage bags as well.

5. Customize Everything Based on Your Needs

A lot of people forget this step but you want to make sure that you are designing your kitchen exactly how you want it to be. Because at the end of the day you are the one who is going to be spending the most amount of time in that kitchen.

So, you want to make sure that it is as efficient and functional as possible, while also being a place where you can enjoy spending your time.

the following trend is a good idea but you have to have a balance of having a trendy design while also making sure that it fits your needs.

Don’t go for the designs that you see on TV or commercials because those just set and people aren’t spending a lot of time in there. As soon as the shoot is done, they leave that kitchen and even the appliances are not being used actively.

But if you replicate the same design in your house you might end up finding out that it’s not as functional as you thought it would be.

But it would still look aesthetically pleasing which is good if that’s what you’re looking for. But in my experience, most people are looking for a combination of both -aesthetically pleasing while also being functional.

The best way to ensure that your kitchen is designed exactly how YOU want it to be is to work with companies like Aurora Remodelers who focus on what’s best for their customers and not what designs are trending and what would be easier for them to deliver on.

Conclusion

Before you finalize the design of your kitchen you should make sure that you are consulting a remodeler and that you have gotten everything right. But you also want to make sure that you are customizing the design based on your needs and not letting them influence what you should do and shouldn’t do.

You should also keep in mind the costs of a kitchen remodeling job while coming up with the design. That way you are ensuring that you stay within the budget that you have come up with and do not go above that. The last thing you want to do is end up spending a couple of grand more than you thought you would.

The best way to avoid that is to make sure that you’re not making a lot of mistakes when coming up with the design.

That’s the reason why I recommend working alongside the remodeler when coming up with the design that way they can recommend what you should and shouldn’t do based on the space you have available in your kitchen.

That alone will shave off a couple of grand that you might have spent had you not hired a remodeler during the design process.

I hope this article helped you with coming up with a better design for your kitchen and having a more fulfilling time and the new kitchen that you will have in a few weeks’ time.
