The Different Types of Garage Floors for Your Home

Share

The garage isn’t usually the first part of the house that most homeowners think about redesigning. There are lots of ways to improve your garage though, so don’t overlook it.

One of the easiest — and most effective — changes you can make is to finish your garage floor. Let’s look at 5 types of garage floors you can choose from.

1. Garage Floor Tiles

Tiles are a great way to give your garage a fresh look. You can choose from interlocking tiles that snap together or peel-and-stick tiles that stick to the concrete below.

Tiles work great for hiding cracks in the floor and you can combine different colours to create interesting and unique patterns.

Tiles work best when the floor is level so you might want to consider one of the other options if your garage floor slopes or isn’t perfectly flat.

2. Roll-Out Vinyl Floor

Roll-out flooring is one of the easiest types of floor to install. You don’t have to worry about fitting tiles together or laying out a pattern to match the size of your garage. Just roll the floor out to cover the entire garage and you’re done.

Roll-out flooring can hide a lot of flaws in your floor and it works even if it’s not perfectly level. The main disadvantage of this kind of garage floor is that it’s not as easy to repair as individual tiles.

3. Paint

Painting is the least expensive of these garage floor options and it’s simple to do. It does take a little more effort than some of the others though and is the least durable option.

Painting won’t hide any cracks or other flaws in your garage floor so make sure you patch them before you start painting. Clean the floor well before the first coat, otherwise, you’ll end up with spots flaking after it dries.

4. Epoxy Paint

Epoxy is similar to latex paint in how you need to prep your garage floor. You’ll need to patch any cracks or other flaws and make sure it’s clean before you start painting.

The difference with epoxy and similar coatings such as a Select Coatings treatment is that it has a hardener mixed in that makes it far more durable than regular paint. It also resists oil stains much better than latex will.

5. Concrete Sealer

If you don’t mind the look of a concrete garage floor but want to protect it from stains and other damage, a concrete sealer may be all you need.

A sealer protects the floor from oil and other stains, making it easier to wipe up. And if you choose a solvent-based sealer, you can create a floor that looks wet long after the sealer dries.

What Types of Garage Floors Do You Prefer?

These types of garage floors give you plenty of options to choose from but it comes down to your preference. Do you want a floor that takes less work but may not be as durable or something that will last much longer but needs more time upfront?

The choice is up to you.
