Expect the Unexpected: Planning for Common Moving Mishaps

Moving comes with a lot of opportunities for mishaps to happen – things that range from minor inconveniences to big problems.

Luckily, with a little planning, you can do your best to avoid some of the most common moving mishaps!

Damage to Furniture, Antiques & Important Pieces

Nothing is more gut-wrenching than damaging one of your prized possessions, expensive furniture pieces, or antiques in a move.

If you have items that you definitely don’t want to have damaged, make sure that you leave yourself plenty of time to properly pack, cushion, and protect those items ahead of time.

While it can be tempting to leave most of your bigger items and furniture until the last minute, you’ll be less likely to properly protect those items if you’re strapped for time.

Additionally, pay attention to and plan (if you can) how you’re going to transport these items.

If you’re packing them into a moving truck yourself, plan out how you’re going to pack up the truck to avoid anything falling, rubbing up against, or banging into your important pieces while driving.

Missing Boxes/Items

It’s easy for boxes and items to “go missing” in the midst of the chaos that is moving, but if you take some time to plan ahead you can minimize your risk of losing track of items.

  • Pack up your home room by room and label your boxes accordingly (and in detail).
  • Create a floor plan/layout of your new home for you and anyone helping you move to refer to when trying to place items in your new space.
  • Double and triple check your old home before you leave including crawlspaces and attics.

Sometimes things happen, even when you plan, so make sure you pack an “essentials” box that you bring with you in your own car when you move.

This should include anything you may need on your first night in your home – toiletries, PJs, change of clothes, toilet paper, plate/utensils, medication, any items needed for kids or pets.

Scratching Floors, Denting Walls, Etc

If you’re moving lots of furniture and boxes, scratches and dents may seem inevitable, but they don’t have to be! Avoid having to do any last-minute patch jobs to walls before leaving your old space (or in your new home) with a few simple tips.

  • Have the right supplies on hand – drop cloths, felt pads, blankets, thin plastic sheets.
  • If you’re moving items with sharp corners or moving large pieces from narrow spaces make sure the item is properly protected and cushioned and use felt pads and blankets to protect your walls and floors while you move.
  • Putting down drop cloths can make some items easier to move and you can avoid scratching your floors!
  • Thin plastic sheets or drop cloths are handy for protecting the carpet and the flooring in entryways from dirty shoes, water, or any stains.
  • Don’t try to move large pieces by yourself. You’re more likely to cause damage if you’re attempting to move larger items yourself – ask for help from those helping you move or hire a moving company.

Not Having the Right Moving Vehicle

While you may want to cut costs when it comes to moving – it’s expensive! Spreading out your move across multiple vehicles like your friend’s truck, your SUV, and a rental trailer may mean that your items are more likely to get damaged or go missing.

The benefits of a moving company like Titan Movers far outweighs the cost you’re guaranteed a team of professionals that know how to keep your items safe during the move, have the proper vehicle to ensure your items have less chance of getting damaged by weather or shifting, and they can make your move more efficient.

Why worry about the move itself when you can focus on settling into your new home?

Weather

The weather may be the most unpredictable part of a move – but as long as you plan you can avoid any damage or delays associated with bad weather.

  • Have rain gear ready – tarps, umbrellas, towels, and plastic sheets.
  • Have lots of water and sunscreen on hand.
  • Wear the right footwear to avoid slips and falls.

You can’t control the weather, but you can be prepared for it!
