Tips to Solve Your Home Plumbing Problems

Dripping Faucets

If you have ever been kept awake by the irritating drip sound, then you know what this is all about.

Dripping faucets lead to a lot of water wastage which translates to hefty water bills at the end of the month.

The seals on the plumbing may get damaged or loose. Since the water is under pressure, it will force its way out through the damaged seals and washers.

The good news is that you can fix it.

You can purchase washers and seals from a home maintenance store near you. Switch off the water supply at the mains.

Force open the water tap with a wrench. Lastly, remove the damaged seals or washers and replace them with new ones.

Screw back the tap carefully. Tighten with a wrench.

Slow Sink Drainage

Many homeowners have probably come face to face with a blocked or slow draining sink.

Forcing down debris and sizable chunks of food down the drain may cause clogging.

Remember, the sink pipe is very narrow to handle small amounts of water. Forcing physical objects down the sink drain may also clog the pop-up outlet.

Get a screwdriver and loosen the screw in the middle of the sink. Remove any debris within your line of sight.

Pour lots of water and push with a snaking wire. You can also pour vinegar or baking soda as it may help clarify what is clogging the sink.

Pour lots of water down the drains till it flows without stopping. Replace the top and screw back the screw.

Running Toilets

Running toilets are worse than the dripping faucets since you cannot hear the dripping sound.

Did you know that 200 gallons of water are lost by running toilets daily? People are literally flushing their hard-earned bucks down the toilet.

You will have to take a deliberate action of monitoring your toilet bowl for signs of running water.

Faulty installation can leave room for water to seep through from the reservoir to the bowl.

The flushing action where someone forcefully pulls the lever can also damage and shift lose the unbalanced fixtures.

You can tighten loose toilet valves with an ordinary wrench. Flush valves measure 3.5 inches.

Replace the faulty valves with new ones. Enlist for quality plumbing services during installation to avoid some of these problems.

Water Heater Issues

Some homeowners usually report problems with their water heating systems during winter.

Usually, it is due to freezing the water inside the pipes if they were not properly insulated.

You can fix it by covering the pipes with insulated materials or applying moderate heat.

Water heaters are also prone to blockage due to sedimentation in the tanks. The sediments can block the narrow lead pipe or showerhead holes. To fix these:

  1. Switch off electricity at the main socket.
  2. Close the water source and unscrew the showerhead.
  3. Wash it thoroughly before replacing it.

Alternatively, you can drain out the water tank to flush out the sediments. Clean and rinse the reservoir before refilling.

Clogged Toilets

Bathrooms and washrooms are usually overlooked when it comes to maintenance. A clogged washroom can jolt you to reality with an overflow of foul small smelling water.

Don’t throw things that can clog the toilet plumbing into the toilet bowl. Things such as polythene papers, packing bags, wipes, and sanitary towels shouldn’t find their way into the bowl.

If clogged, try to unblock with a flexible wire. Remove anything within proximity. Ensure a constant stream of water as you poke until the clogging eases.

You can try cleaning chemicals that can dissolve substances such as soaps clogging the drain.

If all the above fails, get help from the best plumbing contractors.

Leaking or Burst Pipes

Pipes often burst due to the freeze-thaw circles due to the seasons. Sometimes they burst due to aging or faulty installation.

If you see shooting water bills, then your plumbing may be broken somewhere.

Fixing pipes is easy. You can DIY.

Clean the broken area. Apply the filler. Let it dry before letting water flow through the pipe again. Alternatively, seal small holes with duct tapes.

Low Showerhead Water Pressure

Low water pressure is a persistent problem in old homes. The water may drip slowly out of the tap instead of gushing out.

Often, it is caused by leaking pipes that have been corroded over time or broken.

Screw off the showerhead and clean any soap remains that may be stuck in the showerhead.

Scrub any mineral deposits with a toothbrush soaked in vinegar. Another trick is poking the sealed holes with a safety pin.

Bottom Line

Fixing home plumbing problems is easy using an ordinary wrench. Keep solid objects from pipes and other plumbing systems.

Also, keep duct-taped and pipe fillers around in case of a plumbing emergency.
