Winter Is Coming: Here are 5 Heat Pump Maintenance Tips

You can take steps now to make sure you’re ready before the cold weather really hits. Read on to learn the top heat pump maintenance tips to stay warm throughout the long, cold winter.

Heat Pump Maintenance Tips

Heat pumps are about three times more efficient than electrical heating units. That can turn into major energy savings. If you want to realize those savings, you have to make sure that your unit is maintained.

1. Clear Debris from the Unit

Fall is a pretty season, but it requires a lot of clean up. If you haven’t kept up with the leaves piling up in you’re your yard, now is the time to get to work.

You want to make sure that you clear leaves and other debris from your heat pump. In the winter, you do have to clear snow and ice.

If you do need to clear snow and ice, don’t use sharp objects like an ice pick. That can do a lot of damage to the coils of the unit.

2. Change or Clean Filters

Your heat pump takes air from outside and brings it indoors. It relies on air filters to make sure that the air that enters your home is free from debris.

You need to change the air filters about once a month. Sometimes, a good cleaning is all they need.

3. Keep a Steady Temperature

You may be one of those people who turn the thermostat up and down all day trying to find the perfect level of comfort.

Don’t do that. That puts more stress on your heat pump and it raises your energy costs. Keep your thermostat at a steady temperature and bring it down when you’re going to bed.

4. Keep Away from Gutters

Your gutters could drop debris onto the unit. They could also drip water, which could freeze over the unit.

Either situation could cause a big mess. Try to arrange the gutters in a way that they’re away from the unit. If you can’t do that, then keep a close eye on the heat pump system when there’s a storm moving through your area.

5. Have an Expert Inspect the Unit

Even though there are a number of DIY steps you can take to maintain the unit, it’s always a good idea to have your unit looked at by a professional.

They’ll be familiar with your unit, so if something does go wrong, they can fix it fast.  You can work with a company like One Hour Heating and Air Conditioning that can handle service and repairs.

Stay Warm All Winter Long

There’s nothing worse than having a heat pump break down when you least expect it. It always seems to happen in the middle of a cold snap.

You can avoid that scenario by following these heat pump maintenance tips to keep your unit running in great condition throughout the winter.
