How to Replace a Furnace Filter: Remove the Old One

Go to your furnace and see where the filter is housed. For many, it’s in plain sight and can be removed without opening the furnace. Some models require you to remove the main panel of the furnace to get to the furnace filter.

Remove the filter and see what size it is. There are many different sizes and types of filters, such as the 16x20x1 furnace filter. If you don’t think you can remember the size and type, then take a picture of it with your phone.

Replace the filter and head to your local hardware store.

When you visit the hardware store, you’ll see filters of every shape and size. Therefore, taking a picture of the old filter is helpful.

Find the right make and model of the filter and double-check to make sure it is the right one. They are different filters for furnace types including for a ductless heating system. Filters look similar, so just because it looks like the old one doesn’t mean it’s the same kind.

Purchase the furnace filter and head back to the house.

Take the old one and dispose of it in the trash. The filter will have arrows telling you the correct direction for the filter to face. Slide it into the casing until it fits into place and replace the cover.

Make sure the filter is firmly in place and a part of it isn’t sticking out. If there is any space, then dirt and debris make it inside the furnace.
