What is a Stick Welder?

Probably you are asking yourself the question, what is stick welder? To answer this question I need to give you a bit of background information on welding.

The welding process, in general, involves the act of joining two metal pieces, especially steel and iron, through a weld puddle. In general, there are three major welding technologies which are:

  • Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), which is also referred to as “stick welding.”
  • Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), which is also referred to as TIG (tungsten, inert gas).
  • Gas metal arc welding (GMAW), which is also referred to as MIG (metal, inert gas).

We will focus on Stick welding as it is the most commonly used technology. Its popularity is attributed to the fact that it is versatile and easy to use. So how does it work?

A stick welder is usually powered by both AC and DC. However, AC powered variants are more popular because they are cost-efficient. Its working mechanism is dependent on an electrode to carry electric current.

The electrode used on his welder is made up of a core wire. The core wire is usually coded with an influx. When the tip of the electrode is placed in close contact with the workpiece

Why You Should Use Stick Welder in Home Renovation

Home renovations at times happen after natural calamities such as strong winds or floods. At other times it occurs because you probably want to improve the state of your house.

No matter the case at hand, home renovation usually presents various challenges and here are reasons why you will find a stick welder useful.

  1. It is Easier to Get a Power Source for Stick Welder

When undertaking a home renovation, you will most likely power the tools using the electricity connected to your house.

In most houses, the power sources are usually made for home appliances. However, a welder is not a home appliance and at most times requires its own customized power source.

Most stick welders are powered up using the AC power source which is available directly in most homes.

  1. Versatility and Flexibility

During a home renovation, you will most likely use different types of materials. Maintenance welding usually involves metal that is painted or dirty.

The welder can also be used in moist and humid conditions meaning that even during rainy weather the welder still works well. This gives the welder high versatility and flexibility.

It is also easy to change rods and ground clamp can be attached from the welding point. Joints that are hard to access can be reached by the stick electrodes which are usually about 15 inches long.

  1. It Does Not Require Shielding Gas

The electrodes of stick welders generate carbon dioxide as the arc burns off the coating. This means that it produces its own shielding gas eliminating the need to use a shielding gas.

In wind conditions where it blows above 5kmph, the shielding gas usually blows away making it hard to undertake welding with other types of welders.

The fact that the welder does not require shielding gas means that it can be used in windy situations. As a matter of fact, stick welding can be used outdoor with wind speeds of up to 60kmph

  1. The Electrodes Are Cheap and are Tailored to Special Applications

Stick welding equipment is relatively cheap as compared to other welders. This means that the cost of equipment can easily fit a home renovation budget.

If you need to get yourself a stick welder, you can check out Power Tools Geek as they provide a review of the best stick welders in the market.

Maintenance welding can have different metals that require different types of welders. For the case of stick welding, you will be able to weld any material with just a change of the electrode. This is made possible by the fact that there are electrodes specially designed for different purposes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, home renovation usually requires various tools among them a welder. In order to undertake a home renovation, the stick welder is ideal because of the advantages it brings as stated above. Remember getting a good welder goes a long way in ensuring that the job is done well.
