How To Prevent Accidently Tripping Your Home Alarm System

Share
When used correctly, a home alarm system can be an effective way to keep intruders away from your home. Not only are home alarm systems a great deterrent, but they also offer peace of mind to the millions of homeowners that use them each day. Of course, with everything that is beneficial about having a home alarm system, there is one negative – false alarms.

Nobody enjoys false alarms, and many times a false alarm is not due to a faulty system, but rather caused by human error. Many false alarms can be avoided by knowing what can cause them. With that information, you can take measures to keep them from happening.

Not only are false alarms a nuisance, most of them are preventable. When you have a home alarm system installed in your home, the first thing to do is to review your family’s lifestyle with your home alarm specialist. They can make sure the devices they use will fit in with your family’s lifestyle, while meeting your home security needs. For instance, if you have a dog, ask about getting pet immune motion detectors installed so that Fido will not cause the motion detectors to trip every time you leave for work.

If you have multiple pets, make sure to tell your alarm installer about them; they may need to make some adjustments on your pet immune motion detectors so that a little game of dog-chase-cat doesn’t result in multiple false alarms. If you plan on getting protection for your windows such as glass break detectors, you will want to make sure that they are not sensitive enough to pick up certain noises like a your dog barking at the mailman or your cat getting excited and making screeching noises. These do occur, and they occur every day.

False alarms are also caused by people. When you have a home alarm system installed in your home, it is especially important to arm it when you are away. If you have house sitters or someone coming by to feed the animals, it is important for you to give them the alarm code and instruct them how to use the home alarm system. Most false alarms are prevented by doing this. If you don’t, not only will you have false alarms and police called to your home when you are not there, but you may also upset your neighbors.

Another cause of false alarms is not showing people that have access to your home the right way to use your home alarm system. If you have a babysitter, housekeeper, or anyone else coming into your home when you are not there, it is important they know how to use the home alarm system. It is also prudent to give them the name and telephone number of your home alarm monitoring company in case an issue arises. If you don’t want to give anyone your personal code to your home alarm system, inquire about getting everyone their own code. Let them choose one they will easily remember so they don’t cause a false alarm if they forget it.

Another important thing you can do to prevent false alarms is to call your monitoring station if you even think you may have tripped your home alarm system. That way they are made aware and do not call the police if they are not needed. Very rarely does a home alarm system give problems; if it does, you should have it serviced immediately. False alarms are not good for anyone and should be prevented at all costs. Your home alarm system, like anything else, will need routine service. So if you start to see a pattern of false alarms, have your home alarm system looked at by a professional home security company.
