Deep Clean Your Mattress

You can deep clean your mattresses if you think vacuuming the mattress was not enough. Strip your bed of its linens, blankets, pillows, and other objects on your bed.

Deep clean with vinegar to remove any infestations living in your mattress. Make a spray with 2 cups of vinegar and 15 drops of essential oil. Spray it all over your mattress and dry it out in the sun for 6 hours.

Remove any stains with peroxide or enzyme cleaners. Mix a solution with 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide, 1tbps dish soap, 1tbsp warm water, and 1tbsp salt.

Remove the stains by dabbing a cloth with the solution onto it and allow it to dry outside for 5 hours.

Remove Stains on Your Mattress

To remove the stains and smell, sprinkle some baking soda to let it absorb the moisture and neutralize the smell.

You can also use this mix with 3tbsp baking soda, 16tbsp hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap. Let it dry for 20-30 minutes before vacuuming.

Dealing with blood stains?

Remove dried or fresh bloodstains with 1tbsp liquid dish soap, 4tbsp hydrogen peroxide, and warm water.

Mix it all together and spread it onto the stain, wait for 10 minutes and remove. Use a cloth dipped in hydrogen peroxide to remove residue, let it dry and vacuum.

To remove the stains from vomit or wine, you need laundry detergent and a tablespoon of water and mix it till it’s foamy, not pasty.

Spread it onto the stain and wait for 10 minutes before removing it. Wipe the area with a dry cloth, let it dry and then vacuum.

Remove grease stains with salt, dishwashing soap, and a laundry pre-treater. Sprinkle a small amount of salt or artificial sweetener on the stain. Remove it after 30 minutes till an hour.

Then mix the dishwasher soap into warm water and add in detergent or a pre-treater. Rub the stains with a cloth soaked in with the mix until the stains are gone.

Prevent Dust Mites and Bed Bugs

Dust mites are tiny insects that you cannot see with the naked eye and they feed on your dead skin. They excrete enzymes in the feces and people can have an allergic reaction to it.

While bed bugs are reddish-brown blood-sucking insects that live in your bed mattress. You can get rid of them by washing your sheets in hot water and constantly vacuuming your mattress.

Freshen Up Odors from The Mattress

Although you have cleaned up your mattress from stains, bad smells remain and you can remove it with baking soda. Sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface of the mattress and let it stay there for 24 hours.

Vacuum the baking soda and take a whiff to make sure the smell is gone.

You can also use a solution of 1tbs of vinegar, 1tbs of laundry detergent into a bowl. Add in 2tbs of baking soda and a drop of disinfectant.

Dab some solution onto an area that still smells. Sprinkle baking soda again and leave it overnight. Repeat the whole process until the odors have disappeared.

Store Your Mattress Properly

If you plan on moving the mattress to your storage room, then wrap it in plastic and tape it to make a tight seal. It prevents your mattress from getting molds and ensures that it stays dry.

Your mattress had to stay flat because the inner-workings may not work well against its natural positioning. Try not to place heavy objects on top of the mattress top to prevent tear and wear to the exterior.

Air Out the Mattress

When bringing out your mattress after storage, air it out well before you use it. When you allow it to sit out in the sun, it will take a few hours to kill off the remaining allergens and germs.

If the mattress has been in storage for a long while, let it sit out for 6 hours or so. This gives it enough time to inflate properly and ventilate fresh air through it.

How to Sanitize a Mattress

Vacuum your mattress every 3 months. Whenever you change your sheets, vacuum the mattress to get rid of accumulated dust.

Use a mattress cover. A mattress encasement can help block viruses from your mattress. It protects against dust mites and allergens since it’ll be removable and washable.

Place a mattress pad over the mattress cover and under the sheet of your bed. It acts as an additional barrier between you and the mattress.

It’s a great extra cover if you have children for all those nighttime accidents.

Wash the mattress frequently in hot water every season. Not only should you wash your mattress, but also your pillows, sheets, and protectors.

Wash your sheets once a week, protectors every other month, and pillows every three months.

Rotate your mattress once every 3 months. It allows your mattress to live longer and prevents tear and wear on one side.  Note that you cannot flip all mattresses, especially newer ones.

Keep your bedroom temperature at the best setting. Most insects love warm, moist, and dark environments. Keep your bedroom humidity below 50% and the room temperature at 70 F.

Lightly mist surfaces before dusting or cleaning to remove airborne dust. It also prevents the dust from going back into the air when vacuuming.
