4 Roof Cleaning Tips for Shiny Shingles

Share

Your home’s roof is its first line of defense against the elements. Because of that, it’s your job as a homeowner to ensure it stays in tip-top shape all year long.

That said, regular roof maintenance doesn’t stop at repairing the occasional shingle.

Our roofs can get a bit messy while protecting the insides of our homes from the outside world. The dirt, algae, and mold build-up that accumulates over time don’t just look bad — it can wind up damaging your roof if left unchecked.

Here are four must-have roof cleaning tips every homeowner should know.

1. Wait for the Weather

While you can take care of the majority of your outdoor chores when it’s sunny outside, cleaning off your roof is a job best saved for when the sky’s a bit less blue.

It’s nearly impossible to protect your roof from direct sunlight, which can complicate the cleaning process.

Many of the chemicals and detergents you might use while cleaning your roof can react badly to direct UV rays and could wind up damaging bleaching your roof if you aren’t careful. So, if you’re going to try to clean your roof yourself, try to wait for an overcast day.

2. Safety First!

While it may seem obvious, it’s important to note that cleaning your roof is probably one of the most dangerous household chores there is. So, you must make sure to take the proper precautions before attempting to take on the job.

Don’t attempt to clean your roof alone dress appropriately for the job, and make sure to check all of your ladders and harnesses ahead of time to ensure everything’s sturdy and in working order.

If you have any reservations about your ability to clean your roof yourself, you may want to consider bringing in a professional to take on the job for you.

3. Use a Power Washer

One of the most efficient and easiest ways to get your roof back to looking its best is by power washing it.

While you can rent a power washer (if you don’t already own one) and take on the job yourself, as we mentioned before, cleaning your roof isn’t the safest chore in the world.

On top of that, if you’re new to the world of power washing, you may want to practice a bit on a slightly easier job before attempting to haul your equipment up to the roof.

Unless you’re confident in your power washing ability, you may want to consider looking into bringing in a pro to take on the task for you.

4. Make Cleaning Part of Regular Maintenance

Why wait until your roof is black with dirt and algae before cleaning it? Even if your roof looks clean, there’s a good chance there could be harmful debris and mold clinging to it.

The best way to combat hidden dirt is by adding roof cleaning to your regular home maintenance routine.

Like with inspections, you should aim to give your home’s roof a thorough cleaning at least once a year.
