Selecting the Right Bed Frames, Key Things to Remember

1. The Size of the Room

When considering a bed frame, know that the bed will be the largest item in that room. If you feel cramped, you won’t want to sleep in your bedroom. A large bed frame will take up a lot of room and could make it difficult to maneuver around the bed.

Consider a simple under the bed frame, one without a base- or headboard. This will maximize your space and could even give you an extra storage room. There are under the bed drawers that are already affixed to the base or you can purchase specially made sliding drawers for under a metal frame.

If your bedroom is larger, go ahead and purchase a bed frame with a headboard and footboard. This will add character to the bed and won’t take up that much more room in a larger bedroom.

2. The Mattress Materials

There are many different types of beds available today, each manufactured with a unique set of fabrics and materials. Some of these beds, like memory foam, will need a special kind of frame to rest on. This is to make sure there is enough stability under the mattress to hold both the mattress and sleeping adults.

Some of the newer mattresses are created with stronger materials and therefore do not need a large bed frame. Others are sewn together with weaker materials and will need a stronger, more complicated bed frame to hold up night after night.

3. The Mattress Size

You will need to know the exact size of your mattress before you can purchase a bed frame. It would help to have the exact measurements, rather than the size assigned by the factory.

For example, a queen-size mattress needs a queen-size bed frame; however, a full-size mattress will need a double bed frame. And king size mattresses come in California King and Eastern King or it could be labeled simply king size. These are the things you will need to know before shopping for a bed frame that will fit your mattress perfectly.

The type or size of the mattress will be clearly marked on the label or tags that come attached to the bed when you purchase it.

4. The Mattress Height

Some homeowners like a larger, higher mattress and if the bedroom is larger, this would be a good fit. These are dramatic style beds, reminiscent of older, Victorian Era beds that required a step-stool to get up into it.

With this type of bed, a four-poster bed frame or canopy mattress frame would work well. You will need to verify that your ceilings are tall enough for such a bed frame before purchase.

There are also bed risers available for purchase to add height to a mattress without adding height above the bed. You will still need some type of frame under the mattress, but not base- or headboards.

5. The Bedroom Style

For an adult’s room, you can go with nearly any style of bed and frame that fits your style. But for a child’s room or a guest bedroom, you may have to adjust your thinking to accommodate something more compact.

For a children’s bedroom, think about the space above the bed that is not being used. Bunk beds, even if you only have one child, make sense as an extra storage space for stuffed animals or out-of-season clothing. It also comes in handy for sleepovers.

For a guest bedroom, think about the extra space that will not be utilized when there are no guests to sleep in that room. You may want to invest in a daybed or a futon so that when someone is not sleeping over, you can use the room for an arts and crafts room or home office.

Many of the daybed styles have a pullout bed underneath. This is so there is room enough for at least two people to sleep comfortably in a space that is not very large. After the guests leave, the extra bed can be pushed back under the couch-style piece of furniture and be out of sight until needed again.

6. Box Springs Vs Platform Beds

The latest style of bed is a platform bed, which almost never needs a bed frame, although there are exceptions to this rule. A platform bed will be larger or thicker than a traditional mattress, which needs a box spring underneath to hold the weight of two people sleeping.

Box springs are needed, even if the mattress will be placed on the floor. Again, this is because you need support under a traditional mattress.

Unless you need extra firmness, you will not need a box spring under a platform bed. Purchasing a platform bed can be a money saver for those on a budget and a space saver for those with smaller bedrooms.

7. Bed Frame Styles

If you need extra support, you will want to invest in a strong metal bed frame. This paired with a box spring will keep you uplifted and supported at all times.

If you want extra space in your bedroom, opt for a wooden bed frame with built-in drawers to hold clothing and other smaller-weight items. And if you want height, opt for either a four-poster bed or lifters that create the lift you want.

Before going to the store, make sure you know these 7 things to make the process of purchasing a bed frame easy and stress-free. You will also want to make sure you have the correct measurements before leaving the house.
