ADU In Your Backyard

ADU stands for Accessory Dwelling Units. In simple words, they are tiny homes that are primarily built to rent out as an additional source of income for the family. These are tiny homes, which is why these are set up on rent at lower rates than the market.

4 Things to Consider Before You Build an ADU In Your Backyard

Building an ADU in your backyard is a lucrative source of income and can provide money on a long-term basis. Especially if you have an extra space in your home, you can build it outside.  But you need to consider certain things before taking building an ADU in your backyard; this article will discuss four of them.

Factors to Consider

Standards of Property Development

Every area has its property development standards, and you need to check them out before taking this step. The first step is to find out whether you are eligible according to the rules and regulations set up by your state.

In other words, you need to make sure that the ADU unit falls under the category of certain density constraints set up by the local development authorities. If you meet those standards, you will have no problem, and you will be good to go.

Sometimes there are specific rules. For example, a unit must be at a certain distance from the property. Getting in touch with the government is a must if you plan to do this, so you do not run into further trouble later. It is better to be safe right now rather than be sorry later.

Parking

According to the rules and regulations of specific areas, you have to provide an off-street parking space for your ADU. However, this step is not necessary for you if the unit is near a Public Transportation System. Also, if it is in a bustling district, you don’t have to worry about that; otherwise, it can be a problem.

The rules and regulations for building an ADU vary from area to area, and so you need to get in touch with the local government if you are planning to do this. Talk to the officials about it and find ways to provide a parking space for the new unit you are about to build in your backyard.

Privacy Matters

You also need to consider the privacy factor when considering building a unit in your backyard. Usually, it depends upon the person residing in that unit. For example, if a close family member is about to live in that unit, you will not have to worry much about it.

However, if you rent it out to strangers, privacy can be a huge concern for you, especially if you live with your family. So you need to make it in such a way that your privacy does not get disturbed, and you can peacefully live on the same lot without worrying about each other’s privacy.

Utilities

The next thing you should consider is managing the utility connections. You might have to install additional tanks for water connection as well.

ADU units prove to be very beneficial if you are looking for an active source of income without having to do much work. In addition, it is a great way to create extra living space in your backyard.
