People fear about their property being damaged by natural disasters. However, the warning signs for such situations might be unclear and there is little you can do about it. There is a far more important thing that you should be concerned about though. It is about the water damage. This is an aspect of home maintenance that few people care about, and it strikes your home without warning.

Unlike natural disasters however, water disasters can be prevented if you are aware of the problems at an early stage. Here are a few early signs to look out for in your water system:

Unclean Water

You will immediately notice when water coming down from your storage is not clean. The problem however, happens when you don’t know what to do about it. In general, if the water is only a little unclean, you can clean the tank yourself. However, if it is particular dirty such as black or brown in color, it is time to call in professionals to clean it up.

Leaky Pipes

These are a very common sight in many homes. People don’t worry about it too much because it looks hardly threatening. However, it may be a sign of deeper problem in some cases. If your pipes are leaking for a long period, call your local plumber and do a preliminary check on your entire plumbing system. If it is just one pipe, no big deal, but at least you will be sure that it isn’t a major problem.

Clogged Gutters

Although this might not seem to be a big deal, a clogged gutter can cause long term problems. To your drainage system, clean out the dust and remove dry leaves regularly from your gutters. It would help if you did it at least once a month. If you see that your water isn’t draining fully, the reason is probably the gutter. Get a professional to clean it completely and remove leaves from deep inside the gutter to allow free flow of water.

Moist Walls

This particular problem is at first not noticeable. Only a small part of your wall in an obscure corner of your property might be moist because water has leaked into it. However, if you don’t do something about it early it could spread to your entire home. If you find water dripping from your interior walls, call a professional immediately to determine the source of the leak. It could be a faulty air conditioning system or something else.

Why Prevent

A flood inside your home is the most extreme consequence of water problems. However, the more common problems are barely noticeable and therefore you might ignore them. For instance, moist or wet pockets in your property can be a breeding ground for insects and other germs. They can infect you at any time and you won’t know the cause of the problem.

Also, water vapor is easily generated in homes and they can enter your walls. A small exhaust fan at problem areas can solve the problem to a certain extent. You can be safe by getting your home checked for plumbing problems once or twice a year. Professional plumbing services are quite affordable, provided you haven’t let your water problems grow bigger before you call them.

When it comes to prevent property damage due to a faulty water system, the earlier you detect the symptoms and remedy them the better. Nip it in the bud early and you will be safe and avoid spending a fortune on your plumbing later on. If you have an old plumbing system, it might be time to upgrade it with modern equipment right away.
