Clean Out All Debris

It’s always better to prevent damage rather than dealing with fixing something that could have been avoided. With this in mind, you should clean your roof before the winter arrives.

This means any debris that has built up, including in the rain gutters and downspouts. Things like dirt, leaves, pine needles, and twigs can damage your roof tiles. If the integrity of one or more roof tiles is compromised, then you can expect leaks in that area of the roof or worse.

Another reason it’s so important to remove debris is that if it builds up, it can become a home for mold and fungus. All of this can contribute to the damaging and decay of your roof.

Take Care of Nearby Trees

Not only can nearby trees drop more and more debris on your roof, but older trees can be a true danger.

You should trim any trees that are near your house, especially ones with limbs that hang over your roof. It’s crucial to remember that overhanging branches can become weighted with snow, which makes them liable to break and fall on your roof.

Before the cold comes, you may want to remove old trees altogether, just to be safe.

Double-Check Your Roof for Damage

An important part of the prep involves double-checking to make sure that the roof of your house is safe and sound. You can do this by yourself but to be completely sure, it’s worth examining your roof with a professional.

If you do find any kind of damage, then it’s crucial to finish those repairs before the winter arrives. By putting it off, you could be asking for trouble later on. When a roof is damaged, even something as simple as rainy weather can make the problem worse and worse, let alone a harsh winter.

Chimneys are just as important to maintain as the roof itself. Make sure that all the bricks are solid rather than lose.

Just remember that if you don’t take care of your roof, then you’ll eventually need a home roofing installation.

Ready to Begin Roof Winterization?

Now that you’ve learned all about prepping your house against the sleet and cold with roof winterization, you can rest easy knowing that your home and family are safe.
