When it comes to bathroom renovations, one of the most common dilemmas people face is deciding between having a bathtub and a shower.

Traditionally, bathtubs have been seen as a luxury fixture; showers, on the other hand, have always been considered more appropriate for everyday use. Some prefer how efficient showers are, while others refuse to let go of the relaxing experience bathtubs offer.

The Case for Showers

From the 1920s, when showers were first introduced to Americans, to the present day, showers have gained much popularity. They have become synonymous with water conservation and efficiency. Thanks to the many advantages showers offer, trends seem to be shifting in their favor.

A Home Design Trends Survey shows that over 60% of homeowners are ditching bathtubs for showers by opting for bath-to-shower conversions. As the most wanted upgrade of 2023, showers can make your bathroom more spacious and modern and offer other advantages, like a boost in your property value.

This is especially crucial for those living in Tampa because the bathroom design plays a huge role in the resale value of houses.

So, what are some reasons people might prefer showers over bathtubs? Read on to find out.

1. Practical Solution

In smaller bathrooms, showers are a space-saving option. This is because showers are designed to accommodate people vertically, so the space it takes would be limited to around 32 square feet.

Even in states like Florida, showers are gaining more popularity. Depending on the size of your home and bathrooms, showers may also improve the space and can drive up home value by up to 10%.

Furthermore, according to Tampa Living, most people no longer use bathtubs. Either they simply don’t have the time for it or just avoid it due to the many hygiene considerations.

As a Tampa homeowner, if you’re looking to replace your tub with a spacious shower stall, you might want to consider tub-to-shower conversions.

Consider Tampa bath conversions, a popular trend seeking to transform your bathroom by replacing your unused tub and converting it into a stylish new shower.

2. Accessibility

Showers are more accessible than bathtubs for a variety of reasons. For example, people with mobility issues can easily get in and out of a shower more than in a bathtub. Walk-in showers with grab bars can provide safety, as well.

3. Efficiency

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), showers usually use between 10 to 25 gallons of water, compared to 70 gallons used by bathtubs.

This disparity can make a huge difference in your water bill. Moreover, showers may be a better option from a sustainability point of view, especially in states like Florida, as they face the looming threat of water shortage.

4. Cool Features

Showers, nowadays, come with cool (and therapeutic) features. Rainfall or waterfall showerheads are incredibly en vogue right now. They can also come in different high-end styles like jets and steams.

The Case for Bathtubs

Baths have existed since ancient times, when bathing was not just an activity to cleanse yourself. But also to socialize with people. Eventually, private baths became fashionable. According to the web, America’s first bathtub was installed in 1842 – and remains popular even in the modern age.

The love Americans (including Floridians) have for bathtubs remains at odds with the rest of the world, where showers have become more commonplace and preferable.

However, the preference for tubs might have less to do with practical considerations and more to do with personal preference.

1. Relaxation and Spa-Like Experience

A bathtub is ideal for those who love to unwind in a hot bath after a long day. Nothing compares to the experience of soaking in a tub, which is a spa-like occasion. It’s relaxing, offers time-out and stress relief, and can be fun if you use bath bombs or bubble baths.

2. Bathing Children and Pets

If you have toddlers or pets, you might prefer a tub because they’re more practical. Bathing kids in a tub is easier, and giving your furry friend a good wash is also more manageable.

Children also tend to prefer bathtubs, thanks to their need to play with toys (think rubber ducks) in the bath. It’s also a great bonding experience between children and parents.

3. Aesthetic Appeal

Unlike how limited and minimalistic a shower is, bathtubs can be great for your bathroom’s design and overall look. They come in various styles, from clawfoot to freestanding, which can be very aesthetically pleasing, too.

A freestanding tub can be the centerpiece of your bathroom. However, bathtubs take up more extra space, with an average tub being around 72 inches long. This is why having a tub in smaller homes may not be a great idea.

4. Design Options

Bathtubs tend to have more style options, like the kind of tile surround or the material. A bathtub can also accommodate a bunch of fun features like air jets and whirlpools. On the other hand, showers may be a little limited (unless you’re going for large luxurious stalls).

Conclusion

Both showers and bathtubs have pros and cons, and both remain incredibly popular in American households.

However, current trends indicate a shift as people are removing tubs entirely and replacing them with stand-up shower stalls. Ultimately, the choice is yours and may come down to budget considerations, space, and aesthetics.
