Take the case of forgetting your car keys inside the car and then accidentally locking it. Perhaps you had to rush somewhere important shortly after. But now you have to figure out how to get your keys out of a locked car.

How to Get Your Keys Out of a Locked Car: 6 Methods That Work

Most people react similarly when they are in this situation. They’ll panic and get frustrated, which only makes it harder to find a viable solution to their predicament.

That shouldn’t be the case since the solution could be one thought away. All you have to do is teach yourself how to open a locked car in advance. This guide tells you how to get your keys out of a locked car.

Shoelaces Might Be the Answer to How to Get Your Keys Out of a Locked Car

If you own an old car model and lock the keys inside, you don’t have to worry much. Most of these cars have manual locks. It’s possible to open the locks with the help of your shoelaces.

All you have to do is tie a slipknot at the middle of the shoelace. This will create a loop that should be the size of your index finger. Insert the slip knot in the door’s seam by wiggling the shoelace on the driver’s side door.

Use both hands to move the shoelace in a back-and-forth motion. This will push the slip knot downward in the direction of the lock on the vehicle’s door. Once it is close to the lock, maneuver the loop over the lock.

Then tighten the loop around the lock by pulling both ends of the shoelace. Once the shoelace has a tight grip on the lock, pull the lock gently. Voila! You’ve managed to open your car’s door.

You can use a sturdy string for the process if you don’t have laces. Strings and laces can come in handy for unlocking cars with manual locks. So, please make a point of carrying them around to be on the safe side.

The Hanger

This is a classic trick prevalent in movies; you’ve probably heard of it. Now it’s time to try it out. You’ll need pliers and wire coat hangers to kick start the process.

The pliers should assist you in unraveling the hanger. Create a hook on one end of the hanger and straighten the other end. Slide this modified hanger between the weather stripping and the window.

Start looking for the control arm once the hook is below the window. When you reach the control arm, pull it, and the car’s door will open. This method only works with old model cars with manual locks, as is the case with the shoelace trick.

Use a Bobby Pin

This old-school trick works perfectly for cars with manual locks. However, it requires patience and time to pull it off. Begin the process by bending one of the pins at a 90-degree angle.

Then pull apart the other pin as you bend its tip slightly. Insert the first bent pin into the lock, then stick the other one straight inside the lock. Move this pin around the lock while holding the first pin in position.

The lock will open after a few trials. Using a bobby pin is dangerous as it could damage your car if you aren’t skilled at it. It’s best to call for car unlocking services if you don’t want to take chances with your vehicle.

Use a Wedge

“I locked my keys in the car, and it doesn’t have manual locks; what should I do?” Owners of the newer car models are probably asking themselves this question. The answer is simple, invest in a toolkit that contains a window wedge.

You’ll have to use a pry tool first to pull the vehicle’s door frame out when using the wedge. Then you’ll need to use the wedge to hold the door frame out. This will create space by inserting a skinny rod that you’ll use to access the unlock button.

The wedge works for both old and new car models. However, it can be difficult to use this method to unlock your car when you are a rookie. There’s that possibility of damaging the car’s paint and weather-stripping.

Car Opening Services

The tricks in the book won’t work all the time, so you must always have a backup plan. This plan should have a higher potential for success and a lower risk of damaging your vehicle. It’s only professionals like AAA Lockout Services that have these attributes.

Understand those vehicle manufacturers invest a lot of making the cars they sell safe for the buyers. They install sophisticated systems to make it harder for thieves to break into cars.

Locksmiths understand these systems, so it’s easier for them to crack them safely. When you engage them, you save on precious time and potential costs for repairing damaged doors.

Try Using Your Cell Phone

The new car models have mobile applications that drivers can use to control the car. Drivers can unlock or start their cars remotely when installing these apps on their phones. In essence, the app acts as the car’s second key.

Make sure to pair the car key with the app if you have these new models. You won’t have to worry a lot about where you leave the keys once you do this. A quick scroll through the app’s features will unlock your car even if you forget the keys inside.

Get Your Keys Out of a Locked Car

Locking your car keys inside the car shouldn’t drive you into panic mode. It’s not the end of the world. Instead, try finding out how to get your keys out of a locked car from friends or over the internet.

Several options exist for you to explore depending on the car model you drive. However, the best course of action should always be to ask for professional help. Discover more informative articles by browsing through the website.
