So, How Long Does it Take to Build a House?

In short: six months.

While six months is the estimate for most projects, several things can affect the build-time taking it anywhere from four months to well over a year.

Here are a few factors that can affect the build time for your house.

Custom vs. Production

What matters more to you? The location of your home or the house itself?

If you’re looking to build a home quickly on a specific piece of property, choosing a production home can help save you a lot of time.

On average, production homes take anywhere from four to six months to build, depending on where you are.

On the other hand, custom homes, while giving you a lot more freedom in designing your home, can take a lot longer to build.

Generally, a custom house takes more than twice the amount of time to build, anywhere from 10 to 16 months.

That said, a reputable, professional custom home builder, like Currahee Home Builders, can help guide you through the process and help you create your dream house in no time.

Location, Location, Location

Another thing that can drastically affect the build time of your house is where you’re trying to build it.

For example, trying to construct a home in a rural area can take approximately nine months, while building closer to a city only takes seven.

Your location can also affect the permitting process, as well as the availability of resources and workers.

Additional Factors

No matter how well you plan and prepare, you can’t control everything.

One of the most significant deciding factors in how long it takes to build a house is the weather during the build.

Rain and extreme temperatures can bring construction to a standstill and add months to your estimated final build time. So, before construction even starts, you should plan to lose a few weeks to inclement weather.

Finally, any changes you make during construction, from adding a half-bath to changing the molding can add weeks to your build time.

No matter how small the change might seem, if your builders need to go out and find new materials to fill your request, you can expect a delay.

Ready to Build Your Dream Home?

The question, “How long does it take to build a house?” may seem pretty straight forward, but there are a lot of factors that can affect the final answer.

That said, building a house is a rewarding experience that you’ll be able to enjoy for years and years to come.
