In some parts of the country, the average yearly temperature is almost 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Needless to say, this makes for perfect weather to be outside.

But while you might enjoy being outdoors, your home’s exterior probably doesn’t appreciate it as much.

Heat and sunlight can cause damage to the exterior of any home. And while you might not be able to move your house, there are plenty of ways that you can protect it.

By learning more about exterior maintenance, you can protect it from the elements. Here are a few things that you can do to ensure that your exterior stays in good shape for many years to come.

Preparing to Tackle the Exterior

Start by assessing your home exterior to determine areas that need attention. After taking periodic measurements, it’s time to consider the exterior materials of your home.

This includes such as brick, wood, stucco, and metal, as these all require different methods of treatment. It’s important to find the right products like sealants and paints to keep your home looking its best and to keep it protected from the elements.

Cleaning Siding and Other Surfaces

Begin by rinsing the surface with a garden hose on a medium to the low-pressure setting. This will remove any dirt and debris on the siding.

For tough or caked-on dirt, use a sponge or brush and a non-abrasive household cleaner.

You may also need a power washer for tough stains, but be sure to use the lowest appropriate setting so you do not damage your siding. If the siding needs to be painted, you will want to prepare the surface accordingly by scrubbing, sanding, and priming.

Inspecting and Protecting Roofing Siding

A roofing contractor should be consulted to carry out any necessary repairs. This should include inspecting the shingles for any signs of weakness or damage, assessing for any loose or missing tiles, and generally determining whether the roof is in good repair.

Any cracks in the shingles should be filled and any broken tiles replaced to ensure that the roof is watertight.

Other protective measures that can be taken include the application of a protective sealant across all exposed surfaces.

This includes the use of bridging products to give additional protection in areas subject to high levels of wear and tear. You can check these expert siding contractors who are also reputable for your siding repairs.

Ensuring Proper Drainage and Waterproofing

Proper drainage prevents water buildup near the foundation of your home, which can lead to costly water damage if not managed properly.

Start by checking if the soil surrounding your home is sloped away from the foundation to allow rainwater to run away. If the “slope” is graded toward the house, then you should consider hiring a professional to redirect the water away from your property.

Some of the exterior maintenance tips include cleaning out gutters, downspouts, and splash blocks can help reduce damages from poor drainage. Additionally, it is important to apply a waterproof sealant to the foundation of your home to prevent water from seeping in and causing damage.

A Guide to Exterior Maintenance

Exterior maintenance can be expensive and time-consuming, however, the payoff is worth it. Prepping and cleaning your home’s exterior once a year can help preserve your home’s beauty and protection, ultimately saving you money in the long run. So, don’t wait until it’s too late!
