Inspect Security Measures Before You Move In

When you inspect a house, together with room size, design, and exteriors you should also consider what security measures are in place.

If you live in an urban location with a history of burglaries you may want to inform the owner about your plan of installing security cameras or other measures. If these devices are already installed, you may want to consider whether they are working effectively or should be upgraded.

Advertise Your Security

Burglar prevention devices can be very effective. However, burglar deterrent devices can also prove effective.

You may not have a guard dog. However, if you put a “beware of the dog” sign out and even add some compelling evidence such as a food bowl, you may cause a burglar to think twice.

You can do the same with security cameras. You may not have the budget to install functioning cameras, however, you can install fake cameras that look just like the real thing.

Security While On Vacation

When on vacation the last thing you want to think about is the possibility of a burglary at home. Avoid increasing the chances of this by taking a few simple steps.

If letters, flyers, or ads are likely to pile up at your door, why not ask a friend or trusted neighbor to drop by and remove them. This will avoid advertising your absence to any observers.

You should also be careful not to advertise your absence from home on your social networking pages. Countless people can view your Facebook page and see that you are away. This gives criminals a perfect opportunity to break-in while you are on vacation.

Sure-Up Obvious Weaknesses

Likely the first place the criminals will try to use as an entry point is your front door. If the lock or structure of the door itself is old or weak, a criminal could enter simply by placing enough pressure on the right area.

You can purchase a kit that will allow you to strengthen the door frame. It includes a strong bolt and metal trim to protect the edges of your door.

How to Burglar Proof Your Home and Much More

If you have suffered a burglary in the last year or are afraid that you may be the next victim, there is much you can do to secure up your home.

Learning how to burglar-proof your home is more than just protecting your valuables. You are providing peace of mind for yourself and your family.
