Maintaining the paint in your home is an important part of keeping the appearance and overall quality of your home. Damage to your paint can happen easily from falling objects, moving your furniture, or just general accidents, especially if you have kids.

When considering the paint inside your home, there are a number of reputable resources, like Hunter Coast Painting, that provides painting services and quotes for those who are interested.

Here’s how to maintain the paint of your interiors:

Dust Your Walls

One of the easiest ways to maintain the quality of the walls in your home is to handle the dust and dirt that might accumulate. To reach troublesome areas, you might have to move the furniture and pictures out of the way. Also, this should be a task you’ll do every six to eight weeks, depending on how bad they get through that time.

It might not seem like dusting your walls is all that important, but the walls will accumulate dust just like any other surface in your house, and will only accumulate faster in the areas that are not cleaned as often.

An easy way to dust your walls is by using a microfiber cloth or something like a Swiffer wand so you can reach the trouble areas. If you regularly dust your walls during your usual cleaning routine, you’ll likely be able to keep your walls looking nice for a longer period of time.

Make Your Own Soap

With the vast number of different cleaning products out there, it’s more than possible to create a combination of different cleaners that will wash your walls and help maintain their color.

Not to mention that creating your own soap will be cheaper in the long run, giving you the opportunity to use that money elsewhere.

A simple recipe for a cleaning mixture is:

  • 1 cup Borax
  • 2 Tablespoons of dishwashing soap
  • 1 gallon of warm water

Or

  • 1 cup ammonia
  • 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid
  • 1 gallon of warm water

Using these simple mixtures or creating your own with whatever you have on hand will not only clean your walls and make them look incredible, but it won’t also damage your paint.

Some cleaning products have a slew of harsh chemicals that can ruin the paint on your walls, costing you more money in the end.

Test the Paint Before Cleaning

Before cleaning your wall, you want to make sure that the paint won’t come off during the cleaning process, which would require you to repaint the wall to cover the damage.

One way you can test this is by taking the soap you had created and washing an area that you wouldn’t immediately notice, like in the corner. If the paint comes off when you wash this area, it’ll cause more damage than anything.

However, if the paint doesn’t come off when you wash the area, then you may proceed with the rest of the wall. It’s important to keep an eye on it in case something changes and the paint starts coming off. The quality of paint is very important if you want to get the desired look for your home. One perfect choice of paint for your home can be Sherwin Williams Greek Villa paint.

Wash High Traffic Areas

High-traffic areas, like the walls near the front door, the wall where you keep your shoes, the hallways, etc., will be the most important to maintain because they endure the most abuse out of all the walls in your home. Also, keep in mind the areas where your furniture is moved a lot.

Does your couch rub against the wall and take the paint off? Are the kids kicking their shoes off when they arrive home, which will end up scuffing the wall? Identify these high-traffic areas and ensure that the paint in these is maintained and cleaned on a near-regular basis. Doing so gives you a nice and clean interior.

Touch Up Damage

If the damage is bad enough, you might want to find matching paint. Otherwise, every time you walk by that area, you’ll see that spot sticking out like a sore thumb.

Touching up the problem areas will ensure you don’t have to spend more money on repainting the entire wall until you feel it’s absolutely necessary.

When you’re buying products to touch up your walls, make sure they’re quality products. You don’t want the paintbrush bristles coming off while you’re painting and they get stuck in the paint.

Purchasing high-quality products will help ensure that the quality of your walls will last a long time because you’re taking the extra care to make sure every detail is at its best from the quality of the tools to the matching paint.

Seal in Lead Paint

If your home was built prior to 1978, it’s likely that some of the walls in your home are covered with paint that contains lead. If this fact concerns you, the easiest way to test this is to find a business that’ll test the paint for you. All you have to do is send them a sample.

If it turns out there’s no lead in the paint, then there’s nothing to worry about. If the paint does contain lead, you want to seal that in as soon as possible.

Pull all the furniture away from the wall, tape over whatever you don’t want to be coated with paint, and apply at least two layers of fresh paint to seal in the lead. In the long run, this will be safer for your family as exposure to lead can be quite dangerous for any individual.

Once you’ve taken the precaution of sealing in the lead paint, you can take the steps to ensure a flawless finish on your walls that elevate the quality of your home.

Conclusion

Regardless of the method, you choose when maintaining the paint on your home’s interior, if you keep up on it up on a semi-regular basis, it should have good longevity and quality.

If you do feel it’s time to replace some of the paint in your home, make sure you have all the supplies you need, and an idea of what you would like the end result to be. Don’t rush the project as the more time you take, the more likely it is to come out as you want.
