Organic Lawn Care: Eco-Friendly Ways to Care for Your Grass

An eco-friendly lawn will encourage your turf and plants to thrive, while also benefitting the environment.

But when it comes to organic lawn care, it can be difficult to know where to begin, especially if you’ve previously only used traditional methods.

Continue reading to learn how you can create a green lawn that is sustainable, pesticide-free, pet-safe, and environmentally friendly.

Feed Your Lawn Well

Begin by ditching the conventional pesticides that wreak havoc on our delicately balanced eco-systems. They’re toxic, killing all kinds of bugs in your yard while poisoning our rivers and streams through water run-off.

Synthetic fertilizers also emit harmful greenhouses gases into the environment, so opt for backyard composting instead.

You can add organic nutrients by spreading compost and returning grass clippings to increase the fertility of your soil.

Revive organic fertilizer will boost the health of your soil and is scientifically designed to make lawns green.

Change Your Grass-Cutting Habits

Keep your grass long, so the blades have more surface area to absorb the sun’s rays. Don’t trim more than 1/3 of the grass height when mowing to ensure your lawn stays healthy.

Or, you can go one step further. The “No-Mow Movement” is a sustainable initiative that allows your lawn to be more self-sufficient and less reliant on water and chemicals.

This method, eliminating the environmental cost of mowing and watering, encourages the grass to grow tall and wild to create a more natural oasis.

Allowing weeds and pests to be free encourages bugs to return to your lawn and can have a great effect on the diminishing bee population. Making your yard eco-friendly provides them with a sanctuary to live, eat, and flourish.

Restore Native Flowers and Plants

Establishing native plant habitats adapted to the local climate and soil conditions is key to increasing biodiversity. These plants don’t need any pesticides or fertilizers, requiring minimal watering once established.

Planting natives and avoiding pesticides will invite pollinators to return to your lawn. Native insects, butterflies, moths, and birds overwhelmingly prefer native plants. And you cannot overlook the importance of bugs for creating a healthy and thriving ecosystem in your yard.

Be Smart When Dealing With Pests

And on the subject of inviting bugs to your lawn. Pesticides may be effective for getting rid of pests, but they also poison your soil and nature in general.

Instead, you should invite natural predators such as bats, ladybirds, and praying mantis to eliminate unwelcome guests. Build a simple bat house, and your pest problem will be dealt with in no time.

Organic Lawn Care Done Right

That’s enough to get you started. Follow these tips, and your lawn will soon flourish and be green in both appearance and sustainability. Did you enjoy this article about organic lawn care? Well, take a look at more of our great blogs before you leave.
