What is an Accent Wall?

What exactly is an accent wall? An accent wall is a wall on the interior of your home that differs from the other walls in that space. For example, if all the walls in your bedroom are white you can create an accent wall by painting the wall behind your bed a different color.

Accent walls don’t just mean painting one wall a different color – you can use wood paneling, tile, wallpaper, murals, and more to create a feature wall that is different from the rest of the walls in that room. The options are endless.

How to use an Accent Wall to Revamp Your Space

Accent walls were a big trend in interior design a few years ago, but they’re more than a fad. An accent wall can go a long way in changing the look and feel of your space and there are tons of ways to use accent walls in your home.

Add Contrast

One of the most popular uses of accent walls in the home is to create contrast. This is often seen in bedrooms where the neutral colors of the other walls and the furniture are broken up by bringing in a pop of contrasting color on one wall often behind the bed.

The accent color of the wall is often brought into the design of the rest of the room through decorations, rugs, or bedding to create contrast.

This is a great way to use an accent wall in a rental home or apartment as it’s low commitment and can easily add a bit more personality to your space while still being easy to paint over with a neutral color before moving out.

Draw Focus

Using accent walls to draw focus is especially useful to make a space appear larger. For example, painting the wall at the end of a hallway (and if you’re daring the ceiling too) a darker color from the rest of the hall can help draw the eye down the hall and make it appear bigger and more spacious.

Highlight an Architectural Feature or Statement Piece

An accent wall doesn’t need to be a whole wall or even a wall at all. If you have a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe along one wall or bookshelves, painting those furniture pieces can make them a statement piece in a room and keep them from blending into the rest of the space (unless that’s what you want them to do).

Similarly, you don’t need to paint a whole wall for it to be an accent wall. Mid-century modern style does this well highlighting a statement piece in a room such as an antique console table and record player or large mirror with a painted design can add a lot of character to your room. The same goes for unique architectural features of your home such as an archway or nook.

Create Separation

If your home is an open concept, using accent walls can help you differentiate your space. For example, creating a feature wall on the main wall of your dining area or painting the walls of the living space a different color can help differentiate these spaces when kitchen/dining/living rooms are a part of the same open area.

Creating the Perfect Accent Wall

If you’re looking to create the perfect accent wall to complement your space you may want to consider interior painting services in Toronto .

Not only can interior painting services get your project done quickly and with perfect results but they can also apply wallpaper and offer advice if you need help deciding on the best type of accent wall for your space.

Conclusion

Accent walls are a versatile and easy way to revamp your space. With a whole host of different types of accent walls and ways to use them in your home, you can truly transform your space in no time.

You don’t always need to do a full room makeover to freshen up your home, accent walls are a budget-friendly way to make an impact.
