Decide What Type of AC You Want

There are many types of AC units out there and they have different pros and cons. For example, window air conditioners can be mounted near a window with little to no effort. They provide sufficient cooling power and are easy to install.

Portable AC units are also an option if you don’t need to cool down your entire house at once. Lastly, split ductless AC units are ideal for homeowners who don’t want to make holes in the walls and they can provide decent cooling power without making a lot of noise.

Consider the Size of Your Room

As a general rule of thumb, you should buy an air conditioning unit that’s suitable for the size of the room you install it in.

AC units have cooling powers measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). Some charts mention how many BTUs you need for a room of a particular size.

For example, if your room is from 250 to 300 square feet in size, you might need an air conditioner with a capacity of at least 7,000 BTUs. If your measures up to 1,000 square feet, an AC with 18,000 BTUs of power might be ideal.

These are values recommended by HVAC experts and they should help you make a better decision when buying an AC unit.

Consider the Noise Level

If you spend a lot of time indoors, the noise level of your air conditioning unit is very important. A unit that’s too noisy can tire you up quicker and even cause sleep problems.

A more silent AC might allow you to study during hot summer days while cooling you down. Each AC unit has a rated noise level mentioned in decibels. The lower this number, the quieter your AC will be.

Go for an Energy Star Unit

Air conditioners that bear the Energy Star label are designed to be as efficient and economical as possible. They feature better insulation materials that reduce the amount of energy used when heating & cooling your house.

It would be ideal to get an Energy Star rated AC unit not only to reduce your carbon footprint but also to save more money in the long run.
