According to ShedBuilder Magazine, there are almost 3 million new sheds built on an annual basis. Homeowners will often stick sheds in their backyards in order to provide themselves with places to put lawnmowers, bicycles, Christmas decorations, and so much more.

But it’s definitely worth noting that all backyard sheds are not created equal. There are lots of different types of sheds that you can build in your backyard when you’re in the market for one.

In fact, there are dozens of different types of sheds that can provide you with the residential storage that you’re looking for. So people need to make sure that they pick out the best sheds for their specific backyards when they’re coming up with backyard shed ideas.

Today, we’re going to talk about the key differences that exist between three of the most popular types of sheds. Here are the things that set timber sheds, garden sheds, and utility sheds apart.

Timber Sheds

The other types of backyard sheds that appear in this article can be made out of many different types of materials. You’ll often find garden sheds and utility sheds that are built using metal, vinyl, and other materials.

But timber sheds are made out of, well, as you might guess timber. Almost every single aspect of a timber shed will be constructed out of wood.

Generally speaking, you’re going to find that most timber sheds will be slightly larger than garden sheds, utility sheds, and other types of backyard sheds. Larger sheds need to be built using more durable materials, so shed builders will typically turn to wood when they’re building a shed that is on the larger side.

Timber sheds are also ideal for those who are interested in customizing their backyard sheds to meet their exact specifications. It’s pretty easy for shed builders to manipulate timber in whichever ways they want, so they’re able to create custom sheds with it.

There are a few drawbacks associated with timber sheds. For example, timber sheds are susceptible to damage caused by insects and other pests. They can also begin to rot after a while if they’re not maintained properly.

But overall, timber sheds will last for a lot longer than many other types of backyard sheds. This gives them a leg up on these kinds of sheds in many cases.

Garden Sheds

While timber sheds tend to be on the bigger side, most garden sheds will be a little bit smaller and won’t take up too much space in a backyard because of it. These kinds of backyard sheds are usually used to hold things like gardening equipment, garden furniture, and other things that are used outdoors.

There are some instances in which garden sheds will be made out of wood just like timber sheds. But unlike timber sheds, garden sheds can also be made out of metal, plastic, and some other materials.

Oftentimes, homeowners will try to make garden sheds look as aesthetically pleasing as possible so that they’ll serve as focal points in their backyards.

Another thing that differentiates garden sheds from timber sheds is that many garden sheds can be moved around on an as-needed basis. You aren’t necessarily going to be able to pick a garden shed up yourself and put it in a new place.

But since many garden sheds are smaller than timber sheds, they’re more portable and won’t always have to stay in one place forever.

Utility Sheds

Most homeowners use their backyard sheds for residential storage purposes. But there are also some that choose to use their backyard sheds as places where they’ll participate in hobbies or even run businesses.

If you’re going to plan to spend your fair share of time hanging out in or even working in your backyard shed, then a utility shed might be the best choice for you.

A utility shed is usually going to be bigger than both a garden shed and the average timber shed. It’ll need to have plenty of room in it for people to do just about anything that they might want to do in it.

It’s important to note that a utility shed can also technically be a timber shed. There are many utility sheds that are made out of wood.

But a timber shed isn’t always going to be large enough to be considered a utility shed. A utility shed needs to be able to provide people with the space that they’ll need to carry out a variety of tasks.

One of the other things that set a utility shed apart from both a timber shed and a garden shed is the cost that’s often associated with it. A utility shed is going to run you way more than a timber shed or a garden shed in most instances. This is a big part of the reason why utility sheds aren’t always as common as timber sheds and garden sheds.

Which of These Backyard Sheds Would Be Your Best Option?

Are you interested in building one of these types of backyard sheds sometime soon? Before you start reaching out to shed builders, you should get some sense of which kind of shed you want.

As you’ve seen here, there are many differences between, say, a garden shed and a utility shed. So you might not be able to make the most of a new shed if you decide to go with the wrong one.

You should put some serious thought into which kind of shed you want and consider how large you want it to be. It’ll make it possible for you to search for the right shed for your backyard.
