  1. Leakages

A leaky roof is one of the most frustrating and common roof problems. It’s synonymous with windy and rainy areas such as Boise, Idaho. You can be comfortable at home during a storm and see water dripping from the ceiling.

Sometimes you may notice a stained ceiling or water spots on the walls or the roof. Either way, a leaking roof is often a hint of a broken shingle, faulty roofing a hole or missing flashing.

If you have a leaking roof, it’s best to inspect the entire roof. Unless you do regular maintenance then you can focus on the areas around the leakage. Check the chimney, gutters, flashing points, and the vents.

  1. Stagnating Water on the Roof

If your roof is uneven, flat, or has a divot then water can pool and cause costly roof problems. Sometimes the water will evaporate away but during heavy rainfalls, the gathered water can cause the following:

  • Moss and algae
  • Weakening membranes seams allow water underneath
  • Insects and mosquitoes breeding
  • Degradation of roofing materials
  • Extra pressure or sagging when the water is too heavy
  • During winter, freezing water can expand, weaken roof structures and worsen cracks.

You can drain the water manually but if the roof problem is due to poor roofing or uneven surfaces, you may need to contact a roofing expert.

  1. Broken or Missing Shingles

For healthy roofing, every shingle matters. But sometimes a shingle can break or pull out from the roof. A missing shingle blights the roof’s aesthetics and if it’s from the seams it can lead to water leakages.

But what causes missing shingles?

Falling trees, hail storms, flying debris and heavy rains are the most common causes of missing shingles. Sometimes it’s a sign of an aging roof, which can mean repairing the entire roof. Also, shingles can dislodge because of a poorly installed roof.

Do a quick roof inspection to spot broken or missing shingles. Walk around the lawn and look on the roof. You may find the shingles lying on the driveway or lawn or spot the empty spots on the roof from the ground.

  1. Snow and Ice Issues

In Boise, Idaho, snow, and ice are one of the most depressing roof problems. The winter can sometimes accumulate snow and ice on the roof to cause ice dams. Ice can melt, seep under the shingles and leak into your house to damage the ceilings and the walls.

That’s why it’s essential to keep the roof well maintained and inspected before the winter. To get rid of ice dams, always maintain the roof’s temperature at the eaves’ level. Increase insulation and ensure there’s enough ventilation.

Also, seal the attics and roof’s underside to prevent any air leaks. Lastly, make sure you contact an ice dam technician to assess the damage.

  1. Clogged Gutters

Clogged gutters may seem like a small roof issue but they can cause severe damage to your home. A clogged gutter leads to water spillage on the foundation, basement, and on the walls. As a result, mold and mildew may grow while the gutter can break down and cost you a lot of repair costs.

To avoid gutter problems, check them gutters regularly (especially after rains). Watch out for the following signs to trace any gutter issue.

  • Sagging gutters
  • Water spills on the sides of the gutter
  • Birds and pests frequenting the gutters
  • Plants growing on the gutters
  • Stains on the sides of the gutter
  • Irregular gutter maintenance
  1. Trees Damage

Everyone loves to have beautiful shady trees around their homes. But when they grow to overhang on your roof, they can start roof problems. Leaves on the roof can accumulate water. This can rot the shingles and the boards underneath to cause leakages.

Also, the tree branches can rub off shingles, causing shingles to pull off. Tree twigs and debris may even stray into the gutter to clog it.

Make sure there’s no old tree surrounding your house. Always trim overhanging trees to keep the roof free from debris and leaves.

  1. Roof Shrinking and Cracking

You’re likely to deal with roof shrinkage when your roofing material isn’t durable. A shrinking roof exposes your house to severe weather, which can cause serious roof problems.

Sometimes roof shrinkage occurs because of poor roof installation or membrane application. This causes the roof to crack, tear, sag, and eventually leak.

The only way out of a shrinking roof is to contract a reputable roofing company.

  1. Irregular Roof Maintenance

Your roof can only be as healthy as the frequency of inspections and maintenance. You can expect your roof to last long if you take good care of it.

This means cleaning any debris, removing leaves, unclogging gutters, and doing frequent inspections. Also, find a reliable roofing expert to inspect and maintain your roof at least twice a year. After heavy rains or storms, check the roof for any signs of roof issues.

  1. Damaged Roofing Material

You’re more likely to experience more roof problems as your roof ages. Besides, nature and weather changes will deteriorate your roof.

Sealants can stop working, while a nail can pull out because of a shrinking roof. Even frequent or DIY roof maintenance can damage the roof and cost you large repair expenses.

The most professional way of fixing roof problems is to involve experts. They may come at a minor upfront cost, but your roofing is much safer in their hands.

Solving Common Roof Problems

Paying attention to roof problems and maintenance are the most effective ways of saving your roof. Don’t leave your roof’s health to chance. Always inspect it.

When you trace any sign or a real roof problem, handle it on the spot. Above all, always contact a roofing professional to assist and solve your roof issues.
