Achieving an eclectic style involves the combination of several design elements that create a unique look to impress your visitors. It’s challenging to combine elements with different textures, shapes, and styles because it can easily seem like they don’t have anything in common that would unite them aesthetically.

However, you’ll be surprised to find out there’s a common denominator that can link them together with no matter how unalike they may initially seem.

Decorating In Eclectic Style 5 Things to Remember

Decorating in eclectic style is like asking people from diverse backgrounds to be friends with one another. There may be a lot of barriers at first, such as language and cultural differences. But in the end, they can still find a way to bond with each other and respect their distinct traits and personalities.

When working with contrasting design elements, you can find a way for them to still work together to produce a coherent overall design.

If you’re considering decorating using an eclectic interior design, here are five things to remember:

1. Experiment With New Styles

Don’t be too restricted by what you want the output to look like. Try experimenting with a wide range of design elements until you come up with furnishings that work and look well together. The whole point of having an eclectic design is to mix diverse elements together in a single space.

It involves several trial-and-error processes to discover what objects or styles complement one another—so, patience is a must. For example, you may use textured sheets and printed pillows to accessorize your bed.

You can also hang colorful wall tapestries and roll a patterned carpet in the living room, ensuring that both complement your striking furniture piece—the sofa.

2. Have A Unifying Color Palette?

For the different pieces to complement one another, a certain factor must be in harmony. A design element that’s effective in unifying eclectic features is color.  No matter how varied the design components of space are, as long as they have a common color palette, they’ll blend beautifully.

That’s the power color holds; it can neutralize any distinction and set the mood for an entire area.  Therefore, choose a suitable and unifying color scheme for your eclectic house design.

With this particular style, you’re free to play with bright and vibrant colors like blues, reds, and oranges or neutrals such as shades of beige, brown, gray, and white.

3. Mix Global Influences

Make your house a space where distinct cultures meet. Don’t just stick with one plain interior style that only uses elements drawn from a particular theme.

Display your souvenirs from your recent trips to various countries, use the Japanese chair you’ve bought at your neighbor’s garage sale last week, display the wall decor you’ve purchased from Fine Art America, or integrate mid-century modern interior design pieces.

4. Play With Patterns and Textures

Playing with both patterns and textures is tricky since one wrong choice may ruin your entire decorative creation. Same with colors, the textures and patterns can also set the atmosphere in your house. It helps add dimension and depth to the room.

Try combining various prints and designs such as floral patterns with classic prints or dramatic patterns with organic prints. If it looks good, you can continue building on your eclectic decoration; if not, try another combination.

Since this is a trial-and-error process, don’t be too reserved as you explore new patterns and textures. Sticking with two distinct designs in complementing colors is the easiest way to pull off combining patterns. For example, a purple-colored floral wallpaper in your dining area will go well with a yellow-striped rug.

5. Express Yourself

There are no strict rules to consider or steps to follow when decorating in an eclectic style. As your house reflects who you are, make sure you’re expressing yourself freely to those who’ll see your residence. Every item inside your house may describe your personality.

If you prefer to have an eclectic interior as your home design, the first impression people will have about you is that you’re energetic and courageous enough to draw from a wide range of design influences.

Conclusion

Many might misinterpret what an eclectic style is about. It’s not just about combining random things with the hope that they’ll look well together. It may look effortless, but an eclectic style requires the designer to carefully organize various design elements. After all, an eclectic style may involve the fusion of modern and traditional designs.

Believe in yourself and use your creativity to elevate any space. If it seems the combination doesn’t work, try other visual elements. Take your time decorating in eclectic style. Curate pieces until your masterpiece fit the space you’re trying to transform.
