DIY Vs. Professional Carpet Cleaning Which is Best for Your Home

Your carpets are always going to be a big investment into your home- and while they’re often less expensive than some other types of flooring (like solid wood or natural stone for example), chances are you still spent a lot on getting them done.

In fact, now in 2024 it can cost hundreds, even thousands to have a three-bedroom house carpeted with a mid-range carpet. Carpets are great as they make your home feel cozy and warm, but they’re not always the easiest to maintain.

Spills and messes can stain, and carpets can hold onto smells too so it’s important to keep them clean. This means quickly treating any stains that crop up, as well as having regular carpet cleaning done too to reach what your vacuum can’t.

But you’re then faced with the decision of whether to hire professionals or to buy your own equipment so you can do it yourself. Here are some of the pros and cons of each.

DIY Carpet Cleaning

DIY carpet cleaning might be for you if you want to get the satisfaction of doing it yourself (there’s something disgustingly satisfying about seeing dirty water from the machine being poured away!) as well as saving some cash in the process.

You could either buy a carpet cleaner, or you can hire professional equipment like the Rug Doctor for a set period of time and do it yourself. This can work out more budget-friendly than hiring professional services, especially if you have multiple rooms or high-traffic areas to clean.

However, doing your own carpet cleaning also comes with its fair share of challenges. Firstly, there’s a learning curve involved in using carpet cleaning equipment effectively. Without proper knowledge and technique, you run the risk of over wetting the carpet, which leaves behind a residue that can start to smell or even cause damage.

DIY methods might not always deliver the same level of results as professional cleaning either. However, depending on your budget and the job to be done, it can certainly be ‘good enough’ for many people.

Professional Carpet Cleaning

Finding a professional company for carpet cleaning can be the way to go in some cases. Professional cleaners all come equipped with the knowledge, experience, and specialized equipment necessary to tackle even the most difficult carpet cleaning jobs out there.

The quality of results is guaranteed to be good and then can use different methods like hot water extraction, steam cleaning, or other advanced techniques. That way any embedded dirt, bacteria allergens, and smells are taken away. If you have particularly delicate carpets or ones that are made of wool or other materials that are harder to clean then you can be best leaving it to a company that knows what they’re doing, rather than having a go yourself.

However, it’s essential to consider the cost factor- professional carpet cleaning services typically come with a higher price tag compared to DIY methods. The exact cost can vary depending on factors such as the size of your home, the condition of your carpets, and any additional treatments or services you need.

In Conclusion

Ultimately, the choice between whether you go for DIY or professional carpet cleaning all comes down to your priorities, budget, and the finish that you’re after. You could even utilize both methods- go with a professional cleaning every year or so, and DIY methods in between. Or stick to one or the other depending on the results you want.
