The summer season is just around the corner, and you probably got excited just hearing it! Well, who wouldn’t be? It’s the time of the year when people can enjoy the heat and water activities with their family and friends.

However, most people don’t have enough time to spend on summer escapades and hangouts. If you’re one of them, you might want to consider building a summer oasis in the comfort of your home— all with the help of a heat-quenching swimming pool.

Installing a backyard pool is a great home investment. It helps you spend quality time with your loved ones, creates an outdoor sanctuary in the comfort of your home, and allows you to teach your kids how to swim. To install one, you’ll probably need the following: equipment like Pool Spa Life’s portable spas, pool chlorinators, and others.

The most difficult part of owning a backyard pool is keeping it in good condition. If you don’t know how this post may help. Below are the dos and don’ts of maintaining your pool. Follow these simple tips to keep your pool in optimum condition and for more great backyard parties to come.

Do’s Of Pool Maintenance

Pool maintenance is a must. Do carry out the following when performing regular pool maintenance:

1. Do Remove Unwanted Debris

Unwanted debris, such as fallen tree leaves, stones, and other foreign objects, can clog your pool drainage system. To prevent problems, you may use a pool or solar cover. It prevents not only the heat of the sun but also the objects that may dirty your pool.

Removing these unwanted objects can make pool maintenance a lot easier. This can improve the water circulation system of your pool too, meaning you’ll need less chlorine than before.

You can also use strainer baskets to prevent debris from clogging your drainage or a leaf skimmer to easily catch fallen tree leaves rather than catching them by hand.

2. Do Brush Your Pool Regularly

Brushing your pool regularly may work out your body, yet it can help reduce the number of algae and mineral deposits at the bottom of your pool. You may brush your pool at least once weekly using a brush designed for pool cleaning. This can brush your pool tiles, liners, and surfaces more effectively than a simple home brush.

3. Do Use a Pool Filter

As their name implies, pool filters filter the water from your system before it reaches your pool, keeping it clean. So, you want to make sure that they function optimally.

You may purchase a diatomaceous Earth filter, cartridge, or sand. Just follow the instruction provided on the label. Usually, manufacturers recommend cleaning pool filters once the water pressure increases by 10-15 pounds per square inch (PSI).

4. Do Test Your Pool’s PH Level

This procedure is probably the one you often hear a lot. pH levels refer to the acidity or basicity of your pool’s water. You want to make sure that the pH levels aren’t too acidic or basic. You want it to be as neutral as possible, around pH 6.5-7.5.

If the water is too acidic or basic, your skin might react adversely, causing infections and irritations. So, make sure to test it regularly using a pool water kit.

Don’ts of Pool Maintenance

Keep in mind the following don’ts to make sure that you’re doing pool maintenance properly:

1. Don’t Add Shock Directly

A rule of thumb in pool maintenance: if you add shock directly to your pool water, the chemicals you use, such as chlorinators, may damage your pool liners.

Shock granules naturally sink at the bottom of your pool and bleach your liner. As such, the affected area will become weak and brittle, leading to water leakage.

Also, shock granules can harm your eyes and skin during skin contact. To prevent this, ensure to add chemicals to the water, not the other way around. This is a common rule when mixing chemicals and water, preventing the chemical from splashing back.

2. Don’t Just Vacuum Your Pool

Vacuuming your pool may be essential, but it’s not enough to keep it clean. You also have to brush it, as mentioned earlier. Make sure to brush even the hardest-to-reach areas, including:

  • Water line;
  • Pool stairs;
  • Pool crevices and corners; and the like.

Brushing your pool at least once weekly can help prevent algae accumulation and other gunky matters, such as calcium deposits. This will keep your home pool clean.

3. Don’t Jump into Your Pool Right Away

This is another common rule in pool maintenance. Jumping into your pool, especially when it hasn’t been used for several weeks, can cause unwanted health problems. So, before entering your pool, drain the water and clean the surfaces before replacing it.

Final Words

Owning a backyard pool is a great way to quench the summer heat and have fun with your family and friends.

Nevertheless, maintaining it can be difficult. But once you know what to do, it’ll be as easy as 1-2-3. Follow all the dos and don’ts listed above to keep your pool in pristine condition.
