Eyelash Extensions Aftercare: Why and How You Should Do It

You wake up in the morning looking fabulous but to continue enjoying the look of fuller lashes, you need to take proper care of them. Lash extensions can last between six to eight weeks, and you have to ensure you’re practicing aftercare procedures during that time.

Whether you’re a lash connoisseur or are brand new to eyelash extensions or if you get your lashes done by a technician or use an eyelash extension kit, read on for the best aftercare tips.

The Importance of Eyelash Extension Aftercare

Before you learn how to maintain your eyelash extensions, it’s important to know why it matters. Above all, caring for your eyelash extensions ensures the health of your natural lashes and your eye area. If you don’t clean the lashes regularly, you risk infection due to a build-up of bacteria.

There are a few things you want to avoid doing while wearing eyelash extensions (which you can learn more about below). Avoiding these practices further prevents infection and irritation.

Not only that, but if you continually practice habits that should be avoided, you sacrifice the look of your eyelash extensions. It can lead to more lashes falling out and overall diminished quality to them.

What to Avoid Caring for Eyelash Extensions

While there are a few practices and products to avoid while using eyelash extensions, the list isn’t terribly overwhelming and can be easily done. If you’re new to eyelash extensions, it can take some getting used to but once you’re comfortable with it, it will be a breeze to follow through.

Within the first 48 hours after applying the lashes, you will need to avoid getting that area wet. This includes showers, steam, and high heat (which can cause excessive sweating).

After that time period has passed, you’re free to get your lashes wet, but be sure to pat the area dry instead of rubbing. In general, you want to avoid rubbing your eyes too roughly as this can cause the lashes to weaken and fall out.

Oil-based products should be avoided while wearing eyelash extensions. The oil can cause the glue used to attach the lashes to break down which leads to lashes falling out. Similarly, if you tend to have oily skin on your face, keep blotting sheets handy and use moisturizers that mattify the face.

You should avoid wearing mascara with eyelash extensions. This is important for two reasons: (1) cleaning the mascara off would require rubbing and (2) you increase the risk of bacteria buildup.

The lashes on their own look fantastic, so you really don’t need mascara anyway. As for eyeliner, you’ll want to avoid waterproof or oil-based products. When it comes to skincare, you’ll want to use eye creams that are gel-based rather than oil-based.

How to Take Care of your Eyelash Extensions

To maintain the appearance and health of your lash extensions, you will need to practice proper care procedures. The lashes should be cleaned a few times per week with a gentle foaming cleanser. You can purchase this with your eyelash extension kit or from a licensed technician.

You also want to brush out your lashes to maintain their fluttery, full appearance. Use a clean spooly brush and gently comb through your lashes. Most drugstores or beauty stores sell packs of spooly brushes that you can purchase.

While you can reuse a spooly brush (or upcycle one from an old tube of mascara) by cleaning it thoroughly after each use, it’s best to use a brand new one each time to ensure optimal cleanliness.

One downfall that can come with lashes is how they’re slept on at night. If you lie on your side or on your stomach, your face becomes smooshed against the pillow and could cause strain on the lashes.

Try to lie on your back with lashes. You can also consider switching to a satin or silk pillowcase as these materials are gentler on your lashes and won’t cause drying or snagging the way a cotton pillowcase would.

Conclusion

Eyelash extensions give your natural lashes a more voluptuous look to them that’s incredibly stunning. Enjoying the benefit of gorgeous lashes without much prep work is welcome but to keep them looking great, you need to take care of them. Now, you have the tips you need to care for your eyelash extensions and continue looking absolutely fabulous. For more tips on care for your lashes, check out Paris Eyelash Academy
