  1. Look In the Attic

If you’re wondering how to find a roof leak, head into your attic on a rainy day. Bring a flashlight and look up at the underside of your roofing.

Can you see any areas where water is entering the roof? Look for darker or moist areas, which can indicate a problem.

If your attic isn’t completely finished, take extreme care to only step on the floorboards, to avoid falling through the insulation.

  1. Check for Damaged Insulation

Can you spot any damaged insulation or warped walls in your home? If insulation becomes wet, it can dry out or discolor.

If you notice warped or buckled walls or wood in your home, this can be a sign that there’s water damage on the other side of the wall.

Do you have a pitched roof? If so, remember that water will run down from the leak, so search for leaks above where you notice the water damage.

  1. Search for Water Stains and Mold

Water stains are a clear indication of a leak. They may appear on walls, on flooring, or on the ceiling. When looking for water stains, don’t forget to check hard to access areas of the home, like behind appliances or the garage.

If you spot mold anywhere in your home, this can also indicate a problem, as mold and mildew thrive in damp, dark spaces.

Mold can be hazardous to your health, especially for the elderly and those with asthma, so it should be removed as soon as possible.

  1. Need Help Finding a Roof Leak? Hire a Pro

If you suspect roof water damage, the best action is to call a professional roofer who can safely go up on the roof, look for damage, and make any necessary repairs.

Without proper training, going up on a ladder and onto the roof can be very dangerous for the average homeowner, so don’t take the risk— hire a professional.

  1. Check Skylights

One of the most common causes of roof leaks is skylights. Over time, the grouting and seals can become worn or damaged, allowing water to enter the home.

If you have skylights in your home, or high, vault windows, check them thoroughly for any signs of water damage. Keep an eye on them during heavy rain, seeing if you can see any water falling into the home.

Protect Your Home Today

Use the tips above for finding a roof leak in your home. If left untreated, a leaky roof can cause serious water damage, mold, or even flooding, leading to structural damage to the home.

By taking the time to properly inspect your home and its roof, you can pinpoint the source of the leak and repair it before further damage is done.

Get started today and keep your home in pristine condition!
