Did you know that nearly two-thirds of all occupied housing units in America have a garage? If your garage doors are old or damaged, it may be time to replace them. If so, you’re going to need to know about the different types of garage doors available to you. Read on as we take a look at some of the most common garage door styles.

1. Sectional

Sectional garage doors are the most popular kind in the US. They are formed of a series of horizontal panels that are jointed so that each can fold independently of the others. This allows the door to fold up and stow away parallel to the ceiling of your garage, leaving you plenty of space inside. This is a great option if you’re looking for a garage door that you can open automatically.

2. Roll-Up

A roll-up garage door is similar to a sectional garage door, but instead of wide panels, it has narrow jointed horizontal slats. This allows them to fold at a tighter angle than sectional doors can. Roll-up doors are typically used for heavy-duty applications, which means they are usually more expensive than sectional garage doors.

3. Slide

Slide garage doors (also known as slide-to-the-side) are a similar concept to sectional doors but have vertical sections instead of horizontal ones. This allows the door to fold around to hug an inside wall of the garage, rather than the ceiling. They are also ideal for automatic operation and don’t require an overhead operator like roll-up or sectional doors do.

4. Tilt-Up

Tilt-up doors come as one solid section. The entire door pivots up into place. There are two mains types; canopy garage doors overhand the entrance to the garage when fully opened, providing a small canopy. Fully retractable tilt-up doors fold up so that they are completely inside the garage. Since these types of doors require a more complex hinge mechanism, they can be prone to issues.

5. Side-Hinged

Side-hinged garage doors open outwards from the center, like the doors of a barn. These are a more traditional style of garage door, but they can still be modernized. Automation devices are available that can open your garage doors automatically.

Choosing the Best Types of Garage Doors

With so many types of garage doors to choose from, how can you decide which type is the best choice for you? It really depends on your specific needs. You may not have the space for side-hinged doors, or you may prefer them as a way of preserving the maximum amount of space inside your garage.

If you want to install a garage door opener, then sectional or roll-up garage doors may be your best bet. A trusted provider like MF Solutions Inc. can help you figure out which option fits your space and usage the best.

Think about how you want to use your garage, and choose accordingly. For more great content, be sure to check out the rest of the site.
