1. Understand Your Needs

The first step to choosing the best agent is to have a firm grasp of your needs.

Are you looking for a real estate agent to help you sell your house? Or are you in the market for a house?

If you’re buying, what kind of property are you looking for? A beach house? A condo perhaps?

When you know your needs, it’s far easier to zero in on the right expert for you. For example, if you’re selling, you’ll automatically know that you’re looking for a seller’s agent, not a buyer’s agent.

Also, some agents specialize in specific properties, such as condominiums. So, if you’re hunting for a condo, you might want an agent who’s a condo specialist.

With this in mind, you can then start creating a list with the names of potential agents. Do this by getting recommendations from people in your circles or searching online.

2. Licensed to Practice in Your State

Real estate agents must carry a state license in order to practice. As such, it’s important to ensure the agents you’re potentially looking to hire are licensed to practice in your state, or in the state where you want to buy real estate.

If you’re a New York resident, for example, and you want to sell your condo, you need an agent who has a NY license. However, if you want to snap up a house in New Jersey, you need an agent who’s licensed to practice in NJ.

The same applies if you’re planning to buy a property outside the United States. If you want a house in Canada, for example, ensure that the real estate expert you hire has the relevant licenses or certification.

3. Professional Reputation

Professional reputation is what sets real estate agents apart. Some have a reputation for offering services that are below par and others are known for offering superior client services.

You want an agent you can trust and rely on; a professional who will put your interests first, not theirs.

To evaluate an agent’s reputation, go online, and look up their reviews. What are past clients saying about their services? If an agent has lots of negative comments and reviews, avoid them. Your ideal agent is someone with a track record of offering quality services.
