It’s a sensitive topic, one we don’t often discuss in public. But it’s an important one that affects us all: How frequently should you be changing and washing your bed sheets ?

How Frequently Should You Launder Your Bedsheets?

Researcher Dr. Ackerley, from the University of Manchester’s School of Biological Sciences, says that “most people” should be washing their sheets once a week. But, he admits, there are some caveats to that statement.

For example, if you’re someone who tends to sweat a lot during the night or who has skin conditions like eczema, you may need to wash your sheets more frequently. The same goes for people who have allergies or who live with pets.

Additionally, if you’ve been sick, it’s important to wash your bedding more often in order to prevent the spread of illness. And, of course, if there are visible stains or dirt on your sheets, you’ll want to launder them as soon as possible.

In general, though, most of us can get away with washing our sheets once a week. So if you’re not sure how often to wash your bedding, that’s a good place to start.

Why do we Even Need to Change Our Bedsheets?

We sweat during the night. We also shed skin cells, which can accumulate on our sheets and create a breeding ground for dust mites, which are tiny creatures that thrive in humid environments. Dust mites are one of the most common triggers for asthma and other respiratory problems.

Additionally, bed sheets can harbor all sorts of bacteria and other microbes. In fact, one study found that pillowcases have more bacteria than most toilet seats. So, it’s important to keep them clean!

How to Wash Your Bedsheets

It’s best to wash your sheets in hot water, which will kill any dust mites or bacteria that may be present. You can also add a disinfectant to the wash cycle, just to be extra safe.

If you have delicate or sensitive skin, you may want to use a gentle detergent. And if you’re washing your sheets by hand, be sure to rinse them thoroughly afterward.

Once your sheets are clean, it’s important to dry them completely. You can either tumble dry them on a low setting or hang them up to air dry.

What if you Don’t?

If you don’t wash your bedsheets regularly, you could be putting your health at risk. Dust mites, bacteria, and other microbes can build up on your sheets and cause allergic reactions, respiratory problems, or skin infections. So, it’s important to keep them clean!

Additionally, not washing your bedding can also lead to bad odors. No one wants to sleep in a smelly bed!

Overall, it’s best to wash your bedsheets once a week in order to keep them clean and fresh. But if you have allergies or other health concerns, you may need to wash them more often.
