If you need to find space for your belongings to clear off the counters, there are a few things to try.

Keep reading if you want to know how to get more storage in your home without spending too much money!

Declutter

One of the best ways how to get more storage at home is to declutter.

Getting rid of clutter might seem light an intimidating task, however, don’t get too discouraged. The best place to start is in one room. Look for all of the trash and damaged items that you no longer want and throw them away or recycle if possible.

The next step in improving your cluttered house is to donate unused items that are still in good condition. Getting rid of all the clutter will open up more space for important items.

Buy Practical Furniture

Home storage can be a tricky thing to deal with, but sometimes, the biggest problems have simple solutions.

Buying practical furniture can increase your home storage and you don’t have to sacrifice your belongings. Instead of buying an expensive coffee table that can only hold your drinks, get one with inside storage for blankets, movies, and more.

Minimalistic furniture is also practical because the simple designs typically don’t take up a lot of space. The less space being used by your furniture, the more storage you will have to work with.

Utilize the Walls

Look around your home— do you feel like your walls are being underutilized?

Walls are wonderful spaces to utilize to increase storage space. You can remove items from the ground and lift them at eye level by putting up shelves and cabinets. As long as you bolt your shelves into a stud, you should be okay to display your belongings and increase storage.

Always pay attention to weight limits and what you are placing on the walls. If something were to fall and break, you should find another area for it.

Consider an Addition

In some cases, you might not be able to downsize any more than you already have, especially with growing families.

When you have tried everything and still don’t have enough storage, you might want to consider building an addition. Additions don’t need to be overwhelming, they can be as simple as adding closet space to your home.

Although this is a more expensive solution to storage problems, it can help if you plan to stay at your home for a long time.

Raise the Beds

Particularly in children’s rooms, lofting the bed is a great idea.

Many parents recommend purchasing loft boards to add floor and storage space to a bedroom. If your kids are sharing a room or your child needs more storage for clothing, lofting the bed can make a big difference. With the bed raised, you can put a desk, dresser, or other storage solution below.

This opens the room up, making it feel larger and many kids enjoy climbing into their beds at night.

Invest in a Storage Unit

If you are dealing with storage problems for large items, you might want to invest in a storage unit.

Storage units can be found all over cities and towns. You can store boxes, boats, and even vehicles in these units to increase storage at your home. These units are ideal for items that you don’t access very often.

It is better to try and find storage within your home before jumping to this solution. Since this solution will have a monthly payment, it can become costly over time.

Think Tetris

Have you ever played the fun video game, Tetris?

The goal of Tetris is to organize each shape and stack them to increase space. When you are organizing your closets and bedrooms, you should have the mindset you have while playing Tetris. This will help you make the most of your space so that you can easily access items without having everything fall down.

Learning how to properly stack items without damaging them is a skill that most people struggle with. The more practice that you get, the easier it will be to organize your home and open up the room.

Step up Your Stair Game

If you have stairs in your home and aren’t utilizing the space underneath them, you are missing out.

These spaces may be a bit awkward and have strange shapes, however, they are often unused space. You can stack boxes, bins, and toys under the stairs to increase storage and keep the house looking neat.

Some people have also upgraded the space under the stairs and turned it into a children’s play space or dog’s room. You can get creative when it comes to this space, especially if you don’t know where to place your items.

Another great idea for this space is to use it for growing plants. You can easily install a growing light under the stairs and keep the plants protected!

Do You Know How to Get More Storage?

Figuring out how to get more storage can be tough when you have a finite place to work with.

By utilizing the walls and space that you already have with smart decisions, you will never have to buy a larger home. Even if your family is growing, a small addition can make a dramatic difference. Don’t forget how powerful decluttering can be when you want more storage, just be sure to recycle anything that you can.

Before tossing out your belongings, make sure they aren’t better off in a storage unit instead.
