Your shower drains, or bathroom sink may also smell like a sewer at times. The stench can also emanate from the drain of your washing machine.

Smelly Drains: What Causes Them?

Grease accretion in the kitchen drains retains food waste, attracting pests like fruit flies and generating bacteria, causing them to stink.

Toothpaste, soap, and body oils can accumulate hair and dead skin cells in the bathroom, causing a similar accumulation. So, if a drain starts to stink, it’s usually a sign that a clog is forming.

According to John Whittmore from Pipeline Drainage Solutions, you’ll get rid of them if you treat them fast using one of these solutions.

Follow These Simple Measures to Say Goodbye to Foul Odors Emanating From Your Drains:

1. Soap and Boiling Water

The first step in boiling water and soap to eliminate drain odors is to boil a pan full of water. After that, you’ll combine it with soap and slowly pour it down the sink plughole, one drop at a time.

Repeat the technique after a few minutes have passed. Last but not least, run cold water to help dissolve any solidified residues that may be creating the scents coming from your drains.

2. Baking Soda and White Vinegar

This procedure is just as simple as the one before it. Run hot water through the drain plug hole for a few seconds before pouring one or two cups of baking soda down it.

Add a couple of cups of boiling vinegar after that. Allow it to bubble up for an hour or two. Use hot water to flush it out.

The acetic acid in the vinegar, together with the baking soda, will help to neutralize the odor’s source. This can help you maintain your kitchen and bathroom drains unclogged and clean for much longer if you perform them regularly.

3. Lemon Peels with Salt

The combination of these chemicals is a cleaning powerhouse with two punches. Scrub the sides of your garbage disposal with a handful of salt in your kitchen sink.

Repeat the process with some lemon peels crushed in for a fresh scent. You’ll notice the improvement almost immediately, and your kitchen sink will no longer stink.

4. Lemon Juice and Baking Soda

Citric acid can be found in abundance in lemons. It causes a fizzy, bubbling motion when combined with baking soda, which can help remove odors and obstructions from your drain.

Mix the lemon juice and baking soda and carefully pour it down the drain. Allow it to work its magic for an hour, then flush the drain with hot water to complete the cleaning process.

5. Hot Vinegar

Hot vinegar is an excellent way to keep your drains clean and smelling fresh. Warm-up some white vinegar and pour it down your drains to accomplish this.

It can be made more effective by adding a cup of baking soda. However, you may rest assured that it will perform admirably independently.

6. Baking Soda and Salt

Another option is using salt and baking soda to unclog and eliminate foul odors from your kitchen sink drain.

Pour a mixture of equal portions of these components into your sink. Allow a few hours to pass before flushing the mixture with water.

7. Lemon Peels and Ice Cubes

Ice cubes with lemon peels are an excellent way to clear up clogged drains. Apply the hot water approach first, then add some ice cubes to the waste disposal unit for best results.

Pour cold water into the disposal unit, turn it on for a few minutes, add hot water and turn it off again.

8. Chemical Methods

If the natural techniques aren’t working, you could try chemical cleaning. However, when utilizing chemical goods in your home, be cautious.

Get Rid of Smelly Drains Once and For All

Your drains can be kept odor-free with constant attention. Make sure you pour boiling water down the drain at least once a week to keep your drains from stinking. To slow evaporation, add a few drops of mineral oil now and then.

Using a little baking soda to absorb any leftover odors will keep your drains smelling clean and fresh. Always remember to run hot water through everything.

Conclusion

If you’ve exhausted all DIY and chemical options and still can’t get rid of the drain odor in your home, it’s time to hire a professional plumber.
