Wondering how to protect your home?

We don’t blame you. There are about 2.5 million burglaries every year in the US that’s one break-in every 13 seconds.

No matter where you live or the size of your budget, home protection isn’t optional.

But what if you’re not thrilled with the idea of (or you can’t afford) an expensive home security system? Here’s how to secure your home without an alarm.

How to Secure Your Home Without an Alarm: a Step-By-Step Guide

1. Upgrade Your Locks

Regular locks are ridiculously easy to break for a skilled robber. For that reason, every external door in your home should have a deadbolt or a padlock period.

If you rent, ask your landlord about the last time the locks were changed. You never know if previous tenants still have copies of the keys or if they gave copies to anyone else.

Contact a reputable locksmith like Bob’s Lock & Safe if you need to upgrade any locks in your home.

2. Install Security Cameras

Security cameras have come a long way since the first CCTVs in the 1940s.

These days, you can install a tiny (nearly invisible) camera on your fence, above your back door, or even inside your doorbell.

Smart security cameras allow you to monitor what’s going on around your home, even if you’re at work or away on vacation. That’s a small price to pay for peace of mind!

3. Create the Illusion of Being Home

A simple but effective form of DIY home security is to make it look like someone’s always home.

Here are some clever solutions others have successfully used to secure their homes:

  • Motion-activated floodlights
  • Remote control smart lighting
  • Nighttime lights on automatic timers
  • Leaving the TV or radio on
  • Setting up mannequins on the couch
  • Leaving a car in the driveway

Different tactics work for different neighborhoods, but the idea is to deter potential burglars from even setting foot on your property.

4. Post Home Protection Signage

Don’t have a home security system installed? Don’t have a fierce guard dog chained up outback?

So what?

Hang up signs on your porch or fence that say otherwise. No one will know the difference unless they attempt to break in, but those signs will probably be enough to deter them from trying.

5. Traditional Home Security Ideas

Speaking of guard dogs, not all home protection features fancy gadgets or illusions.

There’s nothing wrong with some old-fashioned, tried-and-true methods of securing your home.

You don’t have to get a Rottweiler or a Doberman (unless you want to), but even a small dog acts as a natural alarm system.

If someone is sniffing around your property, you’d better be sure your pup will notice and alert you.

Another idea is even easier: landscaping. Deter thieves from getting close by planting sharp, thorny bushes or shrubs beneath your windows.

Think roses, cactus, bougainvillea, or other defensive plants.

How to Secure Your Home Without an Alarm: Now You Know

Whether you choose to have an alarm or not, you need to make home safety and home protection your priority.

Use the DIY home security tips listed above to sleep soundly tonight (and every night).
