How to Prevent Drain Problems

As I already said, taking care of the plumbing system of your house is crucial if you don’t want to spend hard-earned money on plumbers’ bills. So those are some precautions you can take to ensure that your drain is safe.

Avoid Pouring Cooking Grease into the Drain

When cooking grease is hot it appears liquid but when it gets cold it tends to solidify and this process will happen inside your pipes, clogging them. So the best thing to do is to let it chills inside an empty carton and then once it’s solid trash it in the regular garbage.

Following this process may appear annoying because you have to wait before trashing the grease but don’t forget that a clogged drain is one of the most expensive problems to fix.

Get a Drain Screen

This little piece of metal can make the difference between a drain that it’s clogged once a month and one that works perfectly all year round. In fact, the main function of a drain screen is to prevent that food, hair of little objects get in the drain and clog it.

Do a Baking Soda Treatment Once a Month

This is like a day-spa for your drain but instead of using essential oils, you will need baking soda and white vinegar.

To perform this treatment you will need to sprinkle 60ml of baking soda inside your sink, then using warm water make sure that the powder enters inside the drain tub. Once all the powder has got down, pour 240 ml of white vinegar.

Leave the mixture rest overnight in the tub allowing it to dissolve all the scum and killing the bacteria build-up, the most beautiful thing about this treatment is that it is completely environment-friendly and it also benefits the health of your plumbing system.

How to Prevent Toilet Problems

If a clogged drain is the #1 most common plumbing problem, having a leaky toilet is probably the #2. What makes this issue dangerous is that if the leak isn’t very large it hard to notice that there is a problem.

Spot a Leak in Your Toilet

If you suspect that your toilet is leaking, what you can do to discover if you have a big problem is to put some food coloring inside your toilet’s tank and then wait all night without flushing.

If in the morning you see a bit of food coloring inside the bowl it means that your toilet is leaking and that you might need to change the flush valve.

How to Prevent Pipes from Freezing

All the problems we have discussed previously were somehow related to “internal factor” so it means that the problem was created by something inside the house, in this case, the issues that may hurt your plumbing system comes from outside and in particular, is related to the weather.

But don’t worry, because if you leave in a hot State this problem probably will never happen to you, but if you live in a place the often goes under 32° Fahrenheit during winter you might experience freezing pipes if you don’t take the right precautions.

Insulate Your Plumbing System

The most effective way to prevents that your pipes freeze during the cold season is to insulate them. The good thing about this process is that it’s really easy to do and it’ also inexpensive compared to the damage that a frozen pipe can do.

When you insulate your plumbing system don’t forget to give attention also at the pipes that are inside the house because sometimes the temperature can go down drastically and also the most protected pipes can reach very low temperatures.

Conclusion

These were the most effective ways to prevent common plumbing problems, as you can see these suggestions aren’t hard to implement and with just a bit of work you can avoid really costly and time-consuming plumbing issues.
