What is IoT?

IoT is a global network of things. The regular internet is used by smart devices to send and receive information. This makes it possible for you to connect to a smart product in your home through something like a smartphone.

Normal appliances and devices are fitted with computers that can connect to the IoT . This enables a user to control smart home products remotely.

Why Smart Homes?

Smart home technology is changing the way people look at their homes. Smart products have wonderful benefits for their users.

The basic benefits:

It saves time – Smart homeowners save time whenever their products manage and control time-consuming tasks and chores. Smart vacuum cleaners keep your floors clean without you having to intervene.

It saves money – Products like smart thermostats can save their owners about 20% off their yearly warming and cooling costs.

It saves effort – Products like smart lawn mowers will mow the lawn on preset schedules so you won’t have to.

Simple Ideas to Start Your Own Smart Home

What can you do to start your own smart setup? Here are a few basic things you can do to start enjoying the benefits of owning a smart home

Buy Smart Home Products

Now, it may sound very simple, but just hang on. Next time you buy a new kitchen appliance or home entertainment system you may just as well consider buying smart products. This will save you the time of trying intricate apps and plugins to help make existing products smart.

Then simply connect your new smart products to your smartphone and you’re ready to go! You can also consider smart security products. It helps to provide you with real-time surveillance and control over your loved ones and valuables.

Use Smart Assistants

A smart assistant is a virtual platform that acts as the mediator between all your smart products. Connect your smart devices to your smart assistant to create a single point of access to all your products.

A smart assistant is fitted with Artificial Intelligence (AI). It will learn your routines and preferences and start suggesting solutions to your problems.

Stay Connected

Make sure all products are always within reach of your Wi-Fi signal. You can use simple range extenders to reach more devices in your home.

Encrypt Your Wi-Fi

Many Wi-Fi routers are encrypted, but you need to make sure that yours is. Most smart devices don’t yet have dedicated antivirus software to protect them from malicious software on the internet.

This places your devices at risk of being hacked. Or worse it may place any other information flowing on your home networks like bank credentials and personal information at risk. WPA2 (Wireless Protected Access) is a common form of network encryption.

Understand Product Applications

You need to understand how a product works before you buy it. Its application determines whether you will be able to utilize it.

Take a smart lawn mower for instance. It needs to be installed close to your lawn without anything obstructing its way. Its charging dock needs a power outlet and the whole unit has to be within reach of your Wi-Fi network.
