As a homeowner, it’s natural to want to protect your property from potential threats.

There are a number of ways you can go about doing this, and the best method may vary depending on the type of threat you’re facing.

It always pays to first investigate the best fencing options for your property as a starting point. Fences clearly mark a perimeter and leave fewer vulnerabilities.  Here are some other methods for safeguarding your property from common threats.

Be Sure to Keep All Doors and Windows Locked at All Times

Home security should always be a priority. It is important to ensure all entrance points into your home are always secured. All doors and windows should be firmly locked when no one is in or around the house, as it’s a simple way to deter criminals from entering your property and stealing valuables.

Ensure you check the locks on all entries before leaving the house or going to bed. Keeping your home secure may just be the additional protection you need for peace of mind and greater safety for you and your family.

To help make your home a little more secure, install some easy-to-use security devices. These include padlocks, door and window locks, grates, bars, and bolts. Plus, regularly check to see that the safety features you already have in place are working as they should be.

Doors play a pivotal role in home security, so it is important to choose the ones that will be most effective in keeping burglars out. Outside doors should be constructed of metal or solid hardwood and must be at least one and three-quarters inches thick.

The doorframe material should match the door’s strength, and each door must fit snugly into its frame without gaps. Even the best lock is rendered useless if placed on a weak door, so make sure your doors can withstand forced entry.

It is also safer to install a peephole or wide-angle viewer than to rely on a door chain when trying to identify visitors. Sliding glass doors are especially problematic because they can easily be opened from the outside; however, there are special locks designed specifically for this type of door.

Install a Security System with Cameras to Help Monitor Activity Around Your Property

Installing a security system with cameras will help keep your property safe. Cameras are able to capture high-resolution footage that is easily monitored from any device capable of connecting to the internet.

This can help you observe activity occurring in different areas around your property, which can be a great way to identify and deter any potential intruders.

Furthermore, it allows you to monitor deliveries, visitors, pets, and more offering you peace of mind. The installation process is relatively simple if conducted by a professional and can be implemented quickly for greater security.

Invest in motion-sensitive lights. Motion-sensitive lights are a great deterrent. These lights will automatically turn on when they detect movement, helping to make trespassers aware that their presence has been detected and that they have been seen. This can be enough for them to leave the premises immediately or otherwise deter them from entering your property in the first place.

Keep your Landscaping Trimmed and Free of Hiding Places for Intruders

It’s important to take steps to keep your property and your family safe from intruders. Keeping your landscaping trimmed and free of potential hiding places is essential for burglar prevention.

Branches should be pruned regularly so that fences remain clearly visible, and no branches extend onto buildings or fences, as these can hide fences from neighboring properties or provide a way in over fences.

Additionally, it’s beneficial to keep plants off the ground around windows to limit access points. Lastly, bushes near entryways should be kept low and sparsely planted, so there is little cover within walking distance of the entrance.

Trimmed landscaping not only helps to make the outside of your home look neat and manicured but also serves as an effective line of defense against criminals.

Get to Know Your Neighbors So You Can Watch Out For Each Other’s Safety

Neighborhoods thrive when neighbors look out for each other. Knowing your neighbors and reaching out to them is a great first step toward providing that additional layer of security.

Good neighbors can keep an eye on each other’s homes when they’re away, lending tools and helping hands when needed, and even becoming good friends!

Taking the time to get to know your neighbors can create a safer environment for everyone concerned and even lead to stronger communities.

Always be Aware of Your Surroundings When You Are Outside or Away from Home

Staying aware of your surroundings is essential when traveling away from home, especially in unfamiliar locations. Knowing what is going on around you and being able to react accordingly can be a matter of safety.

Pay attention to people you pass by and keep track of any suspicious behavior. Never leave your personal belongings unattended and remain alert on public transportation. With heightened awareness and preparation, individuals can better understand their environment and stay safe.

Cost Related to Securing a property

Securing a property can involve a range of costs, depending on the type of security measures being employed. Purchasing and installing basic surveillance cameras can cost anywhere between $50-$200 per camera, depending on the quality and brand.

Additionally, if you are looking to employ a full-fledged security system with motion sensors, door and window alarms, and other features, the cost can range up to several thousand dollars.

Of course, the cost of these security measures is a small price to pay for peace of mind and assurance that your property will remain safe. It’s also important to remember that many home insurance companies offer discounts on premiums if you have installed such systems in your home.

Following these simple tips can help to keep you and your family safe from possible break-ins. Remember, criminals are looking for an easy target – don’t make your home one of them.
