After all the attention has gone to other house areas, the laundry typically gets peripheral attention, if any.

Now that you’ve probably lived in the house and are beginning to realize how important that space is and how much you could have designed it better both functionally and aesthetically, you might be thinking of a total overhaul.

Laundry Design and Renovation: 4 Tips to Follow

You’re off to a good start when you’re more mindful of everything that matters. Good path! But now that you’re looking to design your laundry for the second time, you better know the crucial elements that you might have previously overlooked.

This article will give you some valuable tips on how to go about redesigning your laundry space.

1. Consider Outdoor Access

Yes, outdoor access is the first thing you make sure of as you remodel! Ensure that your laundry is located in an area that gives it immediate and convenient access to the backyard.

It’s a big deal because clothes will need to be hung. If you neglect this vital element, you’ll probably be making long trips going to the backyard to hang your clothes.

Of course, you could just throw them into the dryer, which works well unless you want to save money, use less energy, and protect your clothes from the potential wear and tear that sometimes come with dryers.

If you’re also worried about your environmental footprint, then make access from your laundry to the backyard easier so you can readily channel your greywater towards your garden.

Look up plumbers in your area as they can make the entire process a breeze instead of hiring a plumber unfamiliar with local regulations and codes of practice. You could easily find a reliable local Sunshine plumber to address your plumbing concerns when you renovate your laundry.

2. Provide Adequate Ventilation

Sometimes outside access isn’t an option because of the layout of your house. If that’s the case, make sure to factor in ample ventilation in your renovation design.

Adequate ventilation will prevent excess humidity from sitting in the laundry for days on end, causing a musty smell. Worst of all, poor ventilation coupled with high humidity promotes mold growth, which could damage your furniture.

Where possible, include a window, but if you can’t, then consider installing a ceiling fan or an air conditioner to help keep the room well-ventilated.

3. Make it a Dual-Purpose Space

If you want your laundry room to serve two purposes, you’ll need to consider a couple of things. Lighting is one. Never underestimate the power of good lighting to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your space.

It brightens your room and keeps it from looking dingy and uninteresting. Include as much natural light as you can, then supplement it as needed with artificial lighting.

Another consideration is plumbing and ventilation. If you’re using your laundry room as a bathroom as well, you have the advantage of being able to simplify your plumbing and ventilation needs by having them in one place rather than having them installed in two separate rooms.

4. Plan With Space Use in Mind

How you plan to use your laundry room will impact its design.

Do you have a pet? You need to consider this as you renovate your laundry to fit your particular lifestyle. You can leave an open base cabinet in your laundry to function as a bed for your pet.

If you want to go all out, then you might even include a bathing area for your pet somewhere in the room as well. You could also add a cabinet to store your pet’s food and other supplies.

Plan With Space Use in Mind

As for the washing machine that’ll go to your laundry space, would it be the front-loader or the top-loader model? Your choice of the washing machine will guide your laundry space’s design. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, this area should be functional and user-friendly, too.

Additionally, instead of cluttering your laundry with odds and ends, just pick the things you need and cut out the rest.

Because after adding your washing machine, dryer, countertops, storage spaces, and all other items you might be inspired to add, you need to have enough room to be able to move around and complete your tasks.

If you’re not sure how to fit everything in your design, do a simple online search to find good designs that can provide you with some inspiration.

Conclusion

When renovating your laundry space, you must cover all the bases. Consider the tips discussed above to transform your laundry into an area where you’d actually enjoy doing your laundry and other things besides.
