8 Pest Control Techniques Homeowners Should Know

Pests are a problem in many homes and can cause harm to human health and the environment. Knowing how to rid your home of these critters is important.

Luckily, there are numerous ways to tackle this issue. You may choose to hire a pest control professional, or you may opt for an eco-friendly natural remedy. If you’re looking for a pest control solution that fits your budget and lifestyle, this list is for you.

1. Chemical Techniques

You can use plenty of chemical and physical methods to get rid of pests safely. Yes, this can be just as messy, but it can also be very effective.

Considering that some of the most effective treatments for pests cost less than $20, it makes sense to put them on your list. Many pest control chemicals work on a wide array of pests, so it’s up to your which ones you want to use.

2. Sealing All Openings and Cracks

Pests gain access to your home through wide cracks, holes, and gaps around the foundation, basement, and attic. This is especially true for many critters that nest in your walls, and you’ll likely need to enlist the help of an exterminator to get rid of them.

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways you can seal up these openings to prevent further infestation. You can use steel wool to fill in holes, and you may want to call a contractor for help.

3. Deep Cleaning Your Home

Pests attract different elements to your home, and you may find them in your kitchen. For example, you may want to get rid of cockroaches or ants attracted to sugary substances.

The experts say you should thoroughly clean all home areas and store any food in sealed containers. This will help make your home less attractive to pests that come along looking for a quick meal.

4. Keep Your Yard Clean and Tidy

You’ll find that pests are also keen on keeping an eye on your yard. If they can’t get inside, they’ll often make their way to the food source outside.

If you have patio furniture or garbage cans nearby, you must clean them up after you use them. Moreover, this is a good time to take note of any leaks in your house that may lead to cockroach infestations.

Also, ensure that the grass in your yard is well-maintained, and if you have any bushes or tall trees, you should consider trimming them down. This will help cut off access to your home and make it more difficult for pests to enter.

5. Set Traps and Bait

If you have pests that seem resistant to chemicals and physical traps, try using less invasive methods. For example, you can set up specific baits near areas where you frequently find pests.

You might also want to set up sticky traps in these locations and get rid of the pests that have been caught. For instance, rodents are known to get stuck in these sticky traps.

6. Use Natural Repellents

You may also want to consider natural repellents if trying to eliminate common pests around your home. For example, you can try planting mint around your home to keep rats away. You may also want to try using whole cloves, known to be repellent when placed in certain areas of your home.

7. Using Natural Home Remedies

If you’re worried about using too many chemicals and repellents in your home, you may want to consider natural alternatives. For example, you can use lemons to eliminate roaches by filling a clean glass with fresh lemon juice and water.

You can also rub fresh garlic on the areas where roaches are prone to assemble in your home. Alternatively, you can make an infusion out of peppermint oil and sprinkle it wherever you find pests.

8. Consider Using an Exterminator

If these methods don’t seem to work for you, consider using a professional exterminator. They’ll be able to assess your home and determine the best course of action. Of course, this can be very expensive, and you may want to take steps on your own before you contact an exterminator.

Also, some pests may require multiple treatments, so you must be patient and persistent. If your business is infested, consider using pest control for commercial property.

Conclusion

There are several ways to get rid of pests in your home, and the methods on this list are just the tip of the iceberg. Pest control is essential for safety and ecology, so do what it takes to find a solution that doesn’t cause any harm to your home or health.
