Homeowners are giving their bathrooms a great deal of attention these days.

After all, people are spending more time in the bathroom than ever before.

That means the space needs to be as comfortable and accommodating as possible without sacrificing all the functionality we’ve all come to expect from this portion of our homes.

While numerous trends are making appearances in modern bathroom remodels, water closets are rapidly gaining steam.

What is a Water Closet?

As the name indicates, a water closet is basically a small room with a toilet in it.

It places the toilet in its own little space with a door that can be closed to separate it from other components of the bathroom.

Some say it’s a necessity whereas others say it’s an unnecessary waste of space.

Take a look at some of the pros and cons of having a water closet to help you decide if this feature is right for your bathroom to remodel.

Benefits of Having a Water Closet

Water closets offer a range of benefits with one of the most significant being extra privacy.

You can slip into the water closet and close the door without shutting everyone else out of the bathroom.

While you’re in your own private water closet world, others can shower, put on their makeup, style their hair, and complete other tasks that might not be pleasant or possible without the advantage of having an occupied toilet in its own separate enclosure.

Secondly, water closets help foster sanitation. Countless bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other potentially harmful organisms can make their way from the toilet to other areas of the bathroom.

Some of the most germ-riddled areas of the bathroom include toothbrush holders and soap dispensers, but pathogens aren’t limited to those areas.

Germs can invade towels, washcloths, faucets, and virtually anything else in the room.

All those pathogens tend to originate in the vicinity of the toilet, so closing it off from the rest of the room can help slow the spread of germs.

Disadvantages of Water Closets

Added privacy, functionality, and cleanliness are all major benefits water closets can provide.

No matter how modern and stylish toilets may be, having them out of sight and out of mind until they’re needed could also be considered a significant advantage.

Still, there’s no getting around the one disadvantage water closets present: taking up space.

Having said that, it’s important to understand that a water closet doesn’t necessarily have to take up a great deal of square footage in your bathroom.

In truth, the toilet needs a certain amount of space regardless of where it’s situated in the bathroom.

Adding walls and a door around it really won’t make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.

Choosing Whether to Unite or Divide Your Bathroom Fixtures

It’s safe to say that a water closet is a helpful idea for most families. Accidental barge-ins and fighting over time in the bathroom are common issues in the majority of households.

Having a water closet can help solve those issues while keeping quite a few of the most notorious bathroom pathogens in check.

If you have a particularly small bathroom or your home is equipped with multiple bathrooms and shared space isn’t a problem, though, a water closet may not be necessary.
