Dogs are extremely intelligent creatures, and many people don’t realize how much they can learn. Training your dog will not only help them behave better, but it also helps build a stronger bond with you.

It’s important to start training early so that the habits become ingrained into your pet’s routine.

Also, it’s good to know that dog training Tulsa is not only about teaching obedience commands, but it also teaches the dog how to act in many different situations.

With animal behavioral science taking many strides forward, people are learning more about how to communicate with animals and help them live better lives.

The First 16 Weeks Are Your Puppy’s Primary Socialization Window

There’s a time limit on how long your pup can be easily and thoroughly socialized. After 16 weeks, socialization becomes more difficult as puppies become fearful of new situations and people.

This is because, during the critical period of development (up to 16 weeks), they are like sponges, soaking up all their experiences.

Puppy training helps introduce them to new things in a safe, controlled environment, so they don’t become fearful when encountering them outside of training.

That’s why Spectrum Canine Dog Training recommends starting puppy training during the first 16 weeks so that he has positive experiences with people and reinforces that humans are safe. That said, here are five reasons why you should start training your dog.

To Develop a Positive Relationship

Building a bond with your dog is a lot easier when they know what you expect. You will understand how your pup learns and what motivates it during the training process. This will help you better communicate with your pet and ultimately forge a stronger relationship.

Positive training reinforcement will also make your dog happy, as it will associate good things with you. By offering short-term rewards such as the dog’s favorite chewy treats or toys, you will make the training process more enjoyable for both of you.

Studies have shown that dogs that learn through positive reinforcement methods are more relaxed, confident, and self-controlled.

To Teach Life Skills

Puppy training not only includes teaching your pup obedience commands but also how to act in different situations. Just like toddlers, pups go through the developmental stages of learning how to do things by themselves.

Your job is to teach them everything they need for independent survival. These include:

  • Teach your dog, especially if he is highly social and loves people, not to jump on them when greeting. A well-trained dog will sit and stay until given the okay to greet someone.
  • How to potty train your pup to know where to go when they have to relieve themselves.
  • Teach them how to walk on a leash without pulling and properly interact with other dogs.

To Increase Sociability

Increasing your puppy’s socialization skills will help him adjust to different social situations. For example, when you are out for a walk with your pet, they must learn to behave around other dogs and people.

By giving them rules on how they should interact in public places, they will be less likely to act poorly in front of strangers or cause problems for themselves. Encouraging your dog to be friendly and pleasant will make outings much more enjoyable for both of you.

So, by giving him good experiences during puppy training, you’re setting him up for a lifetime of good behavior.

To Avoid Problem Behaviors

As your dog gets older, it may start developing problem behaviors such as barking excessively, chewing on furniture, or becoming aggressive.

If left unchecked, these behaviors can become increasingly difficult to manage and may even require the services of a professional behaviorist. However, you can avoid many of these issues altogether by starting puppy training early and establishing rules and boundaries for your pet.

Investing in early training will be easier. You will foster a sense of security and comfort, reduce problem behaviors, and create a foundation for having a longer-lasting, more effective relationship with your pet.

For Loyalty and Companionship

Puppies provide companionship and unconditional love, which is why it’s important to start training them early on. Training your dog establishes a communication system between the two of you, teaching them that you are someone to be trusted and relied upon.

A well-trained dog is also a much happier dog, as they will feel confident in knowing what is expected of them. This mutual respect and understanding will result in a long and happy life together.

Puppies are a lot of work, but it’s worth the effort. If you want to create a strong bond with your new family member and avoid problem behaviors down the line, start puppy training as soon as possible.

You don’t have to do this on your own, though! A professional dog trainer will help you set up an obedience schedule or potty training regimen to teach life skills like not jumping on people when greeting them.

Investing in early training will make for a more relaxed and content pup with an owner who knows what they are doing.

Socializing your puppy from an early age is one of the most important things you can do to help them grow up to be a pleasant, confident dogs.
