  1. Set a Budget

The budget will dictate exactly what you can do with your kitchen remodel. If you aren’t sure what you should spend on your remodel, experts claim that 10% of your home’s value is a good starting point. The most expensive part of any kitchen remodel is the cabinets, followed by labor.

After then, cabinets and countertops take up a valuable part of the remodel. By the time these four items are taken care of in the budget, most people have exhausted over 50% of it. Remember, that whatever budget you set, keep some set aside for unexpected costs – because they will arise.

Of course, there are ways around using 50% of the budget on these items. You can save money by refacing your cabinets or by painting them instead of completely replacing them. You can also save money on labor by doing some work yourself.

Appliances come in a variety of price points, too. If you want to make an impact on a remodel, then splurge on the countertops and on a beautiful tile backsplash. The options at Tile Supply Outlet will give you plenty of ideas.

  1. Shop Around and Find What You Like

Once you’ve set your budget, it’s time to start looking around for great ideas. You could meet with a design professional or visit local kitchen shops.

Take pictures, measure, and compare prices – especially if your budget is tight. Look around in magazines and online. Know that even if everything you find is out of your budget, you should be able to find similar pieces that are in your budget.

  1. Find Professionals

Unless you’re a carpenter, painter, cabinet installer, or general handyperson, you probably want to hire some professionals to help you get the remodel done well. If you do not know any contractors or professionals, ask your friends or family for recommendations. It is always wise to get a few different bids on the job so you can find the best fit for your needs and budget.

  1. Properly Demo Your Kitchen

Prior to actually demolishing the parts of your kitchen you are remodeling, set a plan. There are plenty of people who are looking for cabinets, appliances, and countertops that can be upcycled or reused. Instead of destroying everything, if you carefully take the kitchen apart, the items you no longer want to use can be recycled rather than disposed of in a landfill.

It’s also a good idea to have a plan for taking apart your old kitchen so you do not damage walls, floors, appliances, or other parts that you are planning to keep intact. Don’t just start swinging the sledgehammer. Remember, someone will have to clean up the kitchen when the remodel is complete – that someone could be you.

  1. Buy Energy-efficient Appliances

A true professional looks for appliances that are at the top of the energy-efficiency list. If you are trying to stay in your budget, you might end up giving up on energy efficiency, but for a few more dollars you could save more money in the long run. You should be able to find appliances that meet your needs and your budget that are eco-friendly and energy efficient. Look for the Energy Star ratings so you can compare efficiency.

  1. Choose Beautiful Finishes

Another good way to upgrade the look of your kitchen without having to spend a fortune on remodeling is to choose beautiful finishes. Of course, the backsplash tile is one place you can do this. But you can also add style with gorgeous flooring and countertops.

Even the finish you choose for your cabinets can also make a big difference in the budget and the appearance of your kitchen remodel.

The options for countertop finishes seems almost endless. They include choices like:

  • Marble
  • Quartz
  • Concrete
  • Wood
  • Engineered stone
  • Laminate
  • Granite
  • Stainless steel
  • Tile
  1. Upgrade the Backsplash

A beautiful backsplash can become a piece of art. It doesn’t matter if the backsplash is a simple, white subway tile or if it is an artistic mosaic filled with color. If you can do the tile work yourself, you can save money on labor and instead, splurge on the gorgeous tile.

If you are looking for an affordable way to redo the backsplash without permanence, you could look into the sticky tile. This type of tile does not need grout or messy glue. You simply use the peel the backing off of the tile and stick it where you want it. You can remove it when you want and put new designs down when you want a change.

Some people eschew ceramic tile altogether and choose something completely different for their backsplashes. One unusual choice is tin ceiling tiles. Stamped metal ceiling tiles can look fantastic in the right kitchen.

  1. Invest in Cabinets

If new cabinets are in your budget, consider them an investment. Good cabinets can last for years and will stay in style, too. The options for wood cabinets include, but are not limited to

  • Maple
  • Cherry
  • Hickory
  • Oak
  • Birch
  • Walnut
  • Pecan

Some wood choices lend themselves to being painted, while others have beautiful grains that should be shown off with attractive stains. The best woods to show off in cabinetry include maple, cherry, walnut, mahogany, and any exotic wood.

If you are planning on painting your cabinets, you might not want to choose an expensive wood, but to go with pine or a laminated option that comes in the color you want. If you cannot buy new cabinets, you could consider hiring a company that puts new doors and drawer faces on your cabinets. The labor is cost-efficient and there is much less mess since the actual cabinet structures stay on the walls.
