Finding and arranging the perfect home decor is a difficult task, and can be even more challenging if you live in a small apartment or home.

That said, although small home interior design might take a bit more ingenuity than working with a large space, it’s not impossible. You can fit all the style and personality you want into even the most petite homes; you just have to know how to do it without creating chaos.

To learn a few of the best small space decor ideas and tips, just keep reading!

Leave as Much Floor Space as You Can

Perhaps the trickiest part about decorating a small space is filling your home without making it cluttered or overcrowded. A cluttered home won’t do you any favors in terms of your mental health, and can even make you feel uncomfortable in your own home, so it’s best to be avoided.

A great way to do so is by leaving as much floor space as you can. This doesn’t mean having half-empty rooms, but you should have plenty of space to walk around.

For example, instead of purchasing a typical nightstand and floor lamp for your bedside, consider installing a small floating table next to your bed with a hanging lamp above it. You get the same effect, but your floor is kept clear.

Choose Folding Furniture

In addition to floating furniture, you should also consider a few folding pieces when decorating a small space. Think about your desk – do you use it all that often? And even if you do, wouldn’t it be nice to fold it out of the way when you aren’t using it?

Another helpful piece, especially for those living in a studio apartment, is a murphy bed. Your bed is likely one of, if not the largest piece of furniture you own. With a murphy bed, you’ll have the ability to free up this large portion of floor space during the day and pull your bed down at night.

Add Plenty of Light

Natural light from windows is preferable but isn’t always an option. Unless you’re building your home from scratch with a small space specialist like Acton ADU and can request a lot of windows, you have to work with what you have.

The last thing you want is for your home to feel cave-like because it’s both small and dark. Adding light will open up any room, making it feel warm and cozy instead of dark and cramped.

There are various types of lighting, each of which should be included in your home design. With overhead lighting, it’s a good idea to stick with a fixture on the smaller side unless you have tall ceilings. Around the room, install sconces and table lamps to add decor while giving yourself and your guests a variety of intensities to choose from.

Hang Mirrors on the Walls

Staying on the subject of light, mirrors are an excellent tool for making small spaces feel larger and more open, as they reflect both space and light. Mirrors give the illusion of more square footage, making it helpful to add a mirror or two when furnishing small spaces.

Don’t be afraid to get creative with your mirrors. Yes, you can hang a large one and be done with it, but you could also hang a few small mirrors here and there or add a mirror or two in between pictures on a gallery wall.

As with any design feature, it should be tailored to your style and taste.

Look for Multipurpose Pieces

This might take some creativity, but thinking outside of the box and furnishing your home with multipurpose pieces can be a lifesaver in small space.

When you’re looking for furniture, think about how it will look and function in your home. Can it be used for more than one thing? In a small home, each piece must earn its place.

For example, if you’re in need of a footrest for your chair, look for an ottoman with space inside to store blankets or board games. If you’re purchasing a murphy bed, try to find one that converts into a desk or table when the bed is folded away.

Not a fan of the idea of a pull-out couch? Consider swapping your couch for a daybed! This works especially well with a bohemian or eclectic design.

Go Big with Your Rugs

If you’re going to put anything large in your small space, it should be a rug. It might seem counterintuitive to lay a large rug in a small room, but it will actually make the room feel bigger. A small rug will only accentuate the fact that it’s in a small space.

The rug you need will depend on the size and shape of the room but don’t hesitate to go as big as you can. It’s okay, even ideal, if most of the furniture sits on top of it, or if it stretches from wall to wall.

Perfect Your Small Home Interior Design with These Tips

The main difference between decorating a small space and a large one is that a small space requires greater attention to detail. Small home interior design is a bit like a puzzle. You have to fit all of the pieces together the right way.

The trick is to fill your space without making it feel cramped and inject plenty of personality without creating clutter. Use these design tips for small spaces, and you’ll be on your way to a stylish home in no time.
