5 Things to Do After a Hurricane Hits Your Home

  1. Check on Your Friends and Loved Ones

During a hurricane, you can lose all contact with your friends and family thanks to downed power lines and lost cellphone signals. After a hurricane, make sure you get in touch with the people you love to make sure that everyone is safe and OK.

Elderly family members and neighbors should be checked in on first to make sure they’re not in need of any medical assistance.

  1. Document any Damage After a Hurricane

From flooded basements to damaged roofs, it’s crucial that you document any damage that was done to your vehicle or your home. Take clear pictures of every single thing that looks like it’s been affected by the storm.

You will need to provide this information to your insurance company later, and it’s a great way to keep a record of everything that needs to be repaired or replaced.

  1. File an Insurance Claim

The sooner you call your insurance company, the faster they can process your claim. Insurance companies will often ramp up their staff to help people who have been affected by a hurricane.

They can also coordinate the contractors and Disaster Assistance Companies and schedule them to come and start work on your home.

  1. Keep Further Damage to a Minimum

If the hurricane has put a hole in your roof or you’re missing a few windows, now is the time to start mitigating the damage. Put a tarp on your roof and secure all windows so that the extra damage after the storm is kept to a minimum.

You don’t want things to get worse, so protect your property as best you can to keep it from getting damaged any further.

  1. Clean Up

Once you take photos of damaged property and have called your insurance company, you can start to clean up debris. Make sure you wear proper safety attired and keep children and pets away from damaged property.

Remove all broken glass, trash, and basic debris from the home so that it doesn’t pose a safety risk to others.

Recovering After the Storm

No matter where you live, it’s important to know what to do after a hurricane hits. These violent and dangerous storms can do some serious damage, but you can still recover once the sun comes out.

Make sure you document any damage to your home and contact your insurance company as soon as possible. Don’t forget to contact friends and loved ones to make sure they’re faring well after the storm.
