Did you know that more than 70% of households in the United States alone have at least one pet? Since it is such a common thing to have pets, pet odor is an equally common problem. If you’ve ever walked into someone’s house and that someone has a pet, you’ve undoubtedly noticed a certain smell.

Top Pet Odor Removal Tips That You Should Know

If you have a pet of your own, you might worry that your own home has this same smell. So, what should you do concerning pet odor removal? Is it as simple as spraying some air freshener in the air?

Not usually, but this pet odor removal guide will teach you everything you need to know. One of the first things you should do is tackle the source of the issue: your pet.

Clean Your Pet and Your Pet’s Bed

If you’re around your pet a lot, you might not even notice that your pet has a smell. This is bad news if you ever have guests at your house since they will undoubtedly be able to pick up on a pet odor. Even if you think your pet smells fine, there’s no harm in giving your pet a wash.

You should wash your pet regularly. This is not only to keep any pet odor away, but it’s also important for preventing ticks or fleas from entering your home on your pet’s fur. Your pet’s fur may be full of dander and dirt as well which your pet may track all over your home.

Ideally, you should wash dogs about once every 3 months. But what about cats? Many people think that washing cats is not necessary because cats groom themselves.

However, this is not entirely true. Even though cats are quite good at removing dirt and other debris from their fur, they are not able to remove all of their dirt. For that reason, you should also wash your cat every few months.

By following these pet odor removal tips, you will be able to remove the source of any pet odor in your home. If there is still a strong pet odor in your home after you wash your pet, it may be due to your pet’s bed. Cat or dog beds can soak up dirt, saliva, fur, and more.

If you give your pet’s bed a whiff, you’ll likely recoil at the smell, especially if you haven’t washed it in some time. Check what kind of pet bed you have and see if there are any instructions for washing it. Usually, you can run it through the washer and dryer without any problems.

Freshen up the Air and Clean Other Pet Objects

The next piece of pet odor removal advice you should keep in mind is to clean any objects your pet interacts with. For example, if you have a tower for your cat or some fluffy toys for your dog, these objects will likely be huge magnets for pet odor.

Anything made of any kind of fabric will be much more likely to absorb odors compared to plastic toys or toys made out of hard materials.

If your dog has a favorite tennis ball, you should even consider washing that. Toys that pick up a lot of pet saliva tend to smell the worst, especially if your pet has bad breath. You should even clean your pet’s food and water bowls on a regular basis.

This is because your pet’s saliva could drop into the bowl. As it sits there unnoticed, it will eventually create an unpleasant smell. But you won’t have to worry about that as long as you wash the bowls along with any pillows, blankets, and other objects your pet might use.

Investing in an air purifier is also a good idea. An air purifier isn’t an air freshener, meaning it won’t add any pleasant scent to the air. However, an air purifier is important for removing odors from the air along with any dust, dirt, or other debris floating around.

Having an air purifier is especially important if you have allergies. Your pet can bring in pollen, dander, grass, and even microscopic insects. All of these factors can irritate one’s allergies.

An air purifier can suck all of these contaminants right out of the air without a problem. It will also make your home smell fresher at the end of the day.

Get Your Carpet Cleaned

You might not realize that your carpet is dirty, especially if it is a dark color that doesn’t show dirt. However, if you have a pet or two, your carpets are likely pretty dirty. Carpets tend to pick up dirt that pets track around along with fur, saliva, and sometimes even urine.

Vacuuming your carpet won’t be enough to remove pet odors from it. This is because a vacuum will only be able to remove superficial debris such as any hair or pieces of dirt. For deeper odors like urine or saliva, you will need to hire professionals for the job such as Clear View Chem-Dry.

Professional carpet cleaners have all the right tools and experience to give your carpet a deep clean. A deep clean will ensure that any pet odors are completely removed from your carpet. You will notice the difference in your home’s air quality and smell once you get your carpet cleaned.

Everything You Need to Know about Pet Odor Removal

If you were unsure where to start with pet odor removal, you should now know all about it. Pet odors can come from anywhere, whether it be your pet, or your pet’s bed, or even your home’s carpet.

While you might be able to clean a lot of these things on your own, there is a time when it might be better to call a professional. And if you do call a professional, you will never be disappointed with the results.
