What Types of Carpet are Best

When choosing a carpet, it’s important to consider factors like their construction, what they’re made of, how they look, and most importantly how well they’ll keep you cozy over the years.

Carpet is already considered one of the best types of flooring for various rooms in a home, but if you need a little help on trying to decide what’s the best kind of carpet before hitting your local carpet and flooring store, keep reading!

Best Types of Carpet Fibers

To begin, it’s important to understand what kinds of carpets there are. The major differences in the look and feel of carpets stem from what the carpet fibers are made out of.

There are two primary types of carpet fibers: natural and synthetic. Natural fibers can be made from the shorn hair of animals such as sheep, goats, and alpacas or from natural fibers found in nature like sisal, cotton, seagrass, jute, silk, and coir. But it is important to keep in mind that natural fibers are more expensive than synthetic fibers and are not as common and here you can check out some Best carpet for stairs.

On the other hand, synthetic fibers use materials like nylon, polyester, and olefin (also known as polypropylene). Acrylic carpet fibers are also sometimes used in the home, synthetic fibers can mimic natural fibers like wool. Some wool carpets can either be natural or synthetic, depending on your preference.

The Top 4 Most Common Carpet Type

Nylon Carpet

Nylon is one of the most popular and softest carpet materials in the marketplace today. This carpet type has been a common flooring staple in homes since 1935. Nylon is very soft, resistant to wear, durable, and difficult to permanently stain.

Nylon holds its color very well over the years. In most cases what you’d purchase in the store today, would look pretty much the same in 10 years’ time.

It’s not unusual for nylon carpets to have a lifespan of 15 years with typical wear and tear in a family home. Additionally, nylon carpets are resistant to abrasions, mildew, oil, and grease-based stains.

Olefin Carpet

Olefin, also known as polypropylene carpet, is made from petroleum products, which makes it less expensive to manufacture than nylon carpets. This kind of carpet resembles real wool and is comfortable to walk on. Although Olefin carpet isn’t as soft as nylon, it’s still great for basement and outdoor spaces.

Since Olefin has exceptional resistance to mold and mildew, it is usually found in loop pile carpet styles.

This type of carpet is a man-made fiber that usually is hypoallergenic. If you are someone who cares about their environmental impact, polyester can be made of recycled plastic bottles and is an eco-friendly choice.

Although it is important to mention that polyester is not as durable as nylon but it is a great affordable option. Polyester has great resistance to normal wear and tear and is available in a bunch of attractive colors and styles.
