Like most areas of your home, your air ducts require routine maintenance. They are an essential component of your home’s functionality and will only perform up-to-par when they are clean.

Unfortunately, many homeowners neglect their air ducts, which leads to problems down the line. So, why should you clean your air ducts? Check out these reasons to discover the answer:

Dust

As you know, the dust has the tendency to collect throughout every part of a home. However, the air ducts are the main gathering place. The problem with this is that as dust accumulates, it is circulated back into the home.

It consists of contaminants, toxins, insect parts, and other unhealthy substances. If you or your family members have respiratory issues, dust will further aggravate them.

Mold

Due to condensation, mold can develop because of the damp environment. That’s a big problem because it is highly damaging to human health.

When there’s mold in your air ducts, it’ll likely present itself with a bad odor. If you notice a musty smell, get your air ducts cleaned and checked for mold immediately!

Higher Energy Bill

If you use the same amount of energy each month, your electricity bill should be relatively the same every month. However, if you notice a spike in cost, but your energy usage is the same, it could be your air ducts.

When the ducts become dirty, it makes the furnace work two times harder so it can efficiently push heat and air through the vents. When this happens, it’s bound to increase the overall cost of your energy bill.

Make it a habit to get them cleaned on a routine basis. That way, you can avoid paying too much out of pocket due to filthy ducts.

Rodent Infestation

Another reason why it’s so important to undergo air duct cleaning is that ducts are an area where rodents like to hide. The area is attractive to mice, squirrels, and other little creatures.

Not only can they potentially mess the system up and prevent it from working properly, but they can also cause other issues.

Rodents are known for leaving droppings behind that contain harmful bacteria. These toxic elements could easily blow into your home and contaminate the entire environment.

Rodents hide in air ducts any time of the year, but they definitely will do so during the cold months. It’s a good idea to get your air ducts cleaned after a long winter.
