Cohesive design is an important component of home decor. It creates a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere for guests and family.

Identifying what you love most and incorporating it throughout your Denver home is one way to create a cohesive look. It can be a color or certain materials you gravitate towards.

Color

The color of your kitchen cabinets and countertops is one of the most important aspects when designing your space. You want to make sure the colors match and create a beautiful visual connection from room to room.

You can achieve this using a monochromatic color scheme or visual connections, like shapes. For example, if you have round chairs in your living room and square ones in your dining room, swapping them out for rectangular ones would help tie the two rooms together.

Choosing a light-colored backsplash that matches or contrasts with your countertop and cabinet color is also a good idea. A bright backsplash can lighten the overall look of your kitchen and add dimension to the space.

It’s important to avoid matching dark cabinets with dark counters, as this can have a gloomy and uninviting effect. However, if you’re set on going with this look, we recommend choosing lighter colors for other elements in the room, such as the floor, paint, or backsplash.

Material

Whether it’s paint color, fabric, or even the finish of your light fixtures, repetition of materials is one of the most effective ways to create a cohesive design.

For example, if you love the marble tile you used in your powder bathroom, consider using it as a backsplash or countertop in your kitchen.

Ultimately, the material you select for your countertops and California kitchen cabinet is up to you. Still, some designers think that only one of the two should be the focal point of your kitchen.

For instance, many homeowners opt for a dark gray or charcoal cabinet paired with white quartz countertops. Alternatively, choose a natural wood for your island counter to complement the wood of your perimeter cabinets.

Likewise, some homeowners prefer to use butcher blocks for their island counters to match the natural wood of their cabinets. Choosing a material that fits your style and meets your functional needs is important.

For example, hardwood is a beautiful choice, but it could be more practical for a kitchen with young children because regular household cleaners can damage it.

Grain

A kitchen with matching cabinets and countertops can look beautiful if it’s done right. Some designers prefer the consistency of color and materials to create a clean and elegant look that works well for any style.

However, choose colors or materials that add some dramatic flair if you want your countertops and cabinets to stand out. For example, if you use a dark granite counter and backsplash, consider using light cabinets or a white island to make the counters pop.

Another factor to consider is the direction of the grain. Consider using a horizontal grain pattern to avoid a monotone appearance if your cabinets are wood.

Similarly, if you’re using bamboo for your cabinetry, choose a vertical or horizontal grain to keep the continuity of color flowing from floor to countertop.

Finish

If you match your countertops and cabinets, choosing a color that complements one another is important.

Using a color wheel can help you determine which colors naturally complement each other and will also provide you with the best options when choosing your cabinet and countertop finishes.

Repetition of shapes, textures, and patterns is a great way to create a cohesive design in your home. But feel free to mix in unexpected elements as well!

For example, if you have wood trim in your living room, consider using the same wood-tone finish in your kitchen for contrast. Or, if you have a favorite shade of paint in your bedroom, consider matching it to your cabinets or even the wall color in your walk-in closet.

Remember that your kitchen is the heart of your home, and it’s an opportunity to show off your style. Whether you want to keep it neutral or make a bold statement, your choices for your cabinets and countertops will set the tone for your whole space.
